Hey everyone. Names Richard im from Morgantown Wv. Just picked up a 2002 xterra from my buddy for $500. Needs a alignment an driver side valve cover gasket. Goal is to make it a weekend fun toy that I can drive on the street when I want. Looking forward to learning from you all.

Welcome to XN! Looks like a killer deal for $500! Let us know if you have any questions.
Seems to be pretty good shape. The inside of the front tires have been worn pretty bad. Sure it's an alignment issue or something in the suspension gone bad. Haven't got to look at it real good yet. An other then the driver side valve cover gasket leaking she seems good. Runs damn good (174k miles). Needs a rear bumper. Might fab up my own with a tire holder. Need to warm up before I start all that. Any thing I should be aware of of look out for with these. Thus is my first Xterra or Nissan for that matter.

Off the top of my head, timing belt. The change interval is 105k. So if yours hasn't been done, its definitely running on borrowed time. If it has been done, it's almost due again. And when you do that, it's wise to change the water pump, cam seals, and everything else that you take off that is a wear item.

Rockauto.Com has good prices for most any part. Dealers used to have a decent deal on timing kits that included the water pump.

For a job like that, I'm always going to recommend OE parts. They were designed to go 105k and you can be confident that they will. With aftermarket parts on these trucks it's been a craps shoot from my experience.

Oh for Sure. As for aftermarket i mean like what sites would be good for finding parts like bumpers, body armor, suspension, ect..

John is one of the best in the business. His products are top notch and his customer service is awesome.

Bumper options are kind of limited

- Shrock makes most things and makes them well. Best for skid plates and the rear bumper. Their build quality is great but customer service is atrocious. Be prepared for 6-9 month lead times.

- Far and away my favorite 1st gen bumper. Jim will make it any way you want from lights, to anything you can think of. Great customer service, but call him. He does not respond well to email.

second on the suggestion from prime, timing belt ans water pump, cam seals, belts, hoses. check the tolerance on the bump stops. if someone ranked up the t-bars too far it will effect the alignment.

If you want to start having some real fun I have an ARB locked front diff for sale ready to go.

Welcome! Dittos on the timing belt. Heard from others that sometimes the oil pans rust thru. Other than that, our 1st Gen 2003 has been a leaker. I nicknamed it Leakin' Lena. It has leaked oil from the rear seal a couple of times, and the radiator sprung a leak on top. All in all they're good vehicles. A tad underpowered for a 4x4. Generally reliable but not toyota reliable. We liked ours enough to buy a 2nd generation as well.

And for $500 for a truck you can't beat that.

I can't wait to really dig into this project. The only problem is I have to many projects. Can't wait to atleast get it out on the road an driving. It's been to damn cold an snowy here an can't get it in the garage for my quad torn apart. Maybe it's time to build a bigger garage.

Appreciate the info. I'll do a full service on it once I can get my hands on it.

Well I finally got it in the garage for a bit. Monday she goes in for an alignment an new tires.

Looking it over things seem pretty good. It will eventually need a new oil pan, an back bumper. Rust as took over the back bumper.

It's getting exciting!!

Welcome to the club!

I agree with others on the timing belt and water pump. You'll want to change the belt before it breaks so the valves don't get bent up.
