Help a guy out?

Well, I had an interview today with a staffing agency, which I thought would help a lot more than it did (so far). They told me to "keep doing what I'm doing" and that they "think that one of our big clients will be hiring a few people in a few months".

I applied to a handful more shops and have yet to hear from a single one of them, and I can't get anywhere on the phone with them either. So, I guess that's it then, that's where I stand. I'm going to keep working at the garage in Hinsdale until I hear from the staffing agency, or until I hear from one of the shops I've applied to. At least working at the garage is something.

I want to say thanks again to all of you who were able to help out a little bit, you kept me out of the red and I really appreciate the generosity.

If you follow up ask them why they didn't consider you if they aren't considering you there has got to be something going on if none call you back

Exactly. It's just speculation at this point, but I strongly suspect my former boss has been making slanderous statements about me. If I get verification of this from the places I've visited, I'll be able to build a case against him. It wouldn't be the first time a former employee has taken the guy to court for trying to pull this kind of shenanigan.

Just found this thread. That's a terrible situation to be in and I completely understand your stress on the situation. Mine is slightly different, but financial hardship none the less. I don't really get stressed out. But I'm kinda stressed by what's going on now. I can't imagine being in your situation. I'd probably lose it. So bravo for keeping it together.

Have you tried applying to lowes/home Depot? They don't have the best pay scale, but they have jobs that are available 24 hours a day. So it might work as a temp / second job and leave you free during the day to find actual gainful employment.

Trust me, if I had the extra scratch I'd definitely send you some. Unfortunately, we are completely tapped right now. Behind actually. On everything.

But keep your head up and keep looking. Even if it's outside of your area. Being that it costs so much to live there, relocation might be in your best interest.

Just keeping the thread current for anyone who's interested.

I haven't gotten anywhere, I've applied to more shops daily and haven't heard back. I've followed up with the ones I've contacted, and they're "not interested". Unemployment has so far proven useless for me, I went to the Unemployment office to talk about the problems I've been having and their best advise was "Try filing again and hope for the best".

I'm about done looking at machining jobs, I've moved on to general labor jobs, automotive service/repair tech. jobs, and various simple jobs that anyone with half a brain could do. There's a diesel shop right up the road from me who is hiring for a number of positions, I inquired there today and am just waiting to hear back. I also dropped off an application today at a place my buddy works at. He's a manager at an armored car business who is desperate for help in the garage, he said they'll hire anybody that knows the difference between a wrench and a dead fish...so I'm pretty confident in that one, haha. It's not up to him, he's just my reference, but it's a foot in the door I guess.

So that's where I stand on that.

I also got bored the other day and decided to take a break from scanning the job listings to write a short "memoir" of sorts about my work history and recent unemployment. It's already 14 pages long...haha. If nothing else, it's helped me maintain my sanity I guess, lol.

I know I've already thanked all of you who were able to help out, but I really truly appreciate it so I'll say it again. Thank you all so much, you helped out a lot with what you were able to give. You're good people.

Sounds like you're doing what you can. And those recent leads sound promising! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Well, the interview went well, the shop is very small but it seemed well-organized. The guy said he has a number more applicants to interview but that he's definitely interested in me. He couldn't throw a dollar figure at me, and I spent just shy of a half a tank of gas round trip. Not thrilled about that, but it's the closest thing to a job I've got right now.

We'll see what happens! Still have a few places I'm waiting to hear back from as well.

Another update:

Haven't heard back yet from the last machine shop interview I had, but he's still got more applicants to talk to. I'm sort of thinking the job will be a no-go based on distance, but I'm not ruling it out 100%.

Finally heard back from the staffing agency I signed on with a month or more ago, he said their client is looking to hire but it's a 2nd shift position which may not work for us. I'm definitely not ruling it out, and he's working on hooking me up with an interview sometime this week. The only problem there is that my old boss is pretty friendly with a number of people that work there, and I'm almost positive he'll put in nothing but negative comments about me. They talk on a friend-basis, as opposed to a professional one. We'll see how it goes, like I said I'm not ruling it out.

My friend who works as a manager at an armored car facility explained the situation there a little better as well. The mechanic position I applied to there wouldn't be his hire, so given my lack of professional mechanic experience it's likely I wouldn't get hired, and one of the 2 positions has already been filled. However, there are 2 types of mechanic positions...one where the mechanic stays at the shop and does all the major repairs, and one where the mechanic gets a company vehicle and travels to different locations to prep the trucks for the day. The latter just does basic maintenance and checkups on the trucks. It's more likely that IF I get a job there, I'd get the travel position. We'll see.

What I DO have to look forward to is that he's got another position there that would be his hire, and he said it's available at any time. It wouldn't pay a ton but it's something, and it's there all the time if all my other opportunities fall through. So at least I've got a failsafe job.

I've also applied at a place that hires people to drive around to their client's locations and do general maintenance and repair work. Company vehicle, company tools, on-the-job training and paid job-related tuition, so there's that to look forward to. My neighbor works there and is going to see if he can pull any strings for me.

So, again, I'm just playing the waiting game...only this time, things are looking even more positive. Whatever you guys are doing, keep it up - whether it be praying, sending good juju, keeping me in your thoughts, whatever, keep it up. I think it's working :)

Staying positive has been really tough for me to do, it was really hard to go from on top of the game to losing my job over petty BS and being unemployed for 4 months. I've been doing my best to keep my head up, and I'll admit, I fumbled a few times. If it weren't for the immense support from my XterraNation family (YOU GUYS), I'm sure I would have cracked by now. So, thanks for all that. :)

Great news man! It can take some time and a few lucky breaks...but it sounds like you are in the position to have...options. Always a good sign!

Stay positive and keep on looking. Good thing you have options. Worst case is you learn something new and onto your new path
