Hello with high mileage

I just purchased a 2004 automatic with 238k miles, was super cheap and intend to use as a hunting vehicle. It was used by a gentleman who drove over 100 miles a day to work, supposedly kept up with maintenance (that's what they all say ). Is there any heads up I need or look out for?

Welcome!

If you don't have documentation as to the last time the timing belt was changed, it definitely needs doing asap. The maintenance interval on it is 105k. So it should have been done twice. Given the mileage I can guarantee it's been done once otherwise it would have blown the engine. Check on the radiator support. There's a sticker there. If it was done by the dealer it'll be marked on that sticker.

If you need to do it, while you're in there, there's a few other thing that get swapped. Water pump, cam seals, and all the gaskets and belts that are removed to get to the timing belt.

Are these trucks relatively inexpensive to work on/maintain? I definitely appreciate the advice!

Yes. Do the maintenance as recommended. It'll last forever.
So in regards to the topic of timing belt. I have the 2.4 which is the chain. In doing my tune up and removing my valve cover for new gasket, I found the chain to be nice and tight with no slop. Also cam lobes looked very good. So does the chain need changed at some point?

In theory, no but in practice, eventually. The links will wear over time but there's no schedule for replacement. Just keep an eye (ear?) on it and the guides.
