How's it going everyone. Names Chris, I just purchased 2012 Xterra S with 4wd. It is an automatic but ill learn to live with that, lol. Been wanting an Xterra for quite a long time so I'm really happy to be getting one finally. I don't actually get it till this coming Sunday (Carvana purchase). Looking forward to getting to know you all and moding the ever living piss out of my X.

Forgot to put where I'm located. I'm currently in the city of lost wages (Las Vegas). Not sure how long I'll be here but I'm here now

Welcome from Virginia! The 5 speed auto in the 2nd Gens are some of my favorite automatic transmissions, I think you'll find it's quite versatile.

What kind of mileage is on your son to arrive Xterra?

It's at 95k. A little high but from what I've seen with proper maintenance it still has a long way to go.

It's just breaking in. I'm at 212k, only 100 miles or so from 213k. Look up the Poor Man's Flush for the transmission. Get some decent quality fluid in the t-case and diffs and keep on keeping on.

Welcome from Denver! I love Vegas. While you're there look up Silver State Nissans. Good group of local guys if you need hands with something.

Any recommendations on what fluids I should use. I always change all fluids when I get a used vehicle. Not worried this time about the coolant as the carfax shows me the whole system was flushed and replace at 93k.

I had been using Amsoil but have pretty much switch to Valvoline Synpower gear oils and Maxlife ATF.

I usually run Valvoline Maxlife 5w30 motor oil but I tried one change worth of Amsoil and now I'm trying Mobile1. I have a top end tick that shows up about 3500 miles into an interval with the Maxlife. Got nearly 4k before the tick came back with the Amsoil. Gonna test the Mobile but it's looking like I'll be going back to Maxlife.

I use a green synthetic grease for my greaseable joints. It's a trailer wheel bearing grease the Advance and AutoZone both usually stock. I've been using it for nearly 20 years in my vehicles and around the farm growing up and its always done great. It changes to a gray color when it gets wet so I can monitor boot and seal life.

I typically Mobil 1 synthetic all the fluids. im not sure on the Gen2 transmission, maybe someone else knows better. I have had good luck with Mobil 1, Nissan fluids and Amsoil as well.

Honestly, I think if you use a major brand fluid in the right specifications, you'll be fine.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I usually use Castrol synthetic for my motor oil but always down to try others. Not used to auto transmissions so I have no clue on which atf to use.
