HEFTY vs. Construction Barrel

So as I was traveling home on I-70 through a construction zone a semi decided to merge into my lane while I was right beside him (doing approx. 45mph). Being as I didn't want to wrestle with a semi I decided taking my chances busting through the big orange construction barrels. I didn't even feel it when I hit it and the thing went flying. There is a tiny dent where it hit the quarter panel and a little orange paint but the paint wiped off and the hefty had no marks at all. With a plastic bumper there is no doubt I would have at the minimum had front and damage and possibly would have set off the air bags. I am very happy I purchased this bumper and it may have just paid for itself right there.

Glad you're ok, I think that hefty could have taken on alot more than a barrel and kept on truckin'! I could imagine it makes you feel good to see for yourself what the bumper can take, without a scratch. I mean it's just a barrel, but that's 10-20 lbs (empty) and hitting it at 45 MPH would definitely do damage to a stock bumper/grill/hood/lights/fender without protection.

Abuse, the barrel cones on the interstate are meant to SLOW or STOP you, as they are there in case that you were to merge through them. They are there for the safety of the workers. I cone itself doesn't weigh that much, but the tire at the bottom does. I am glad to know that a hefty could blow right through one though.

And Abuse, like I said, there are there to stop you, most cars traveling 60-70, make it through 2-3 before they are stopped.

No doubt you would have had some pretty serious damage with the stock bumper and plastics. I'm glad you made it through it safe and without expensive repair bills. I'd bet it would have cost well over the price of the Hefty bumper.

The Hefty paid for itself right there.

The air bags would NOT have gone off though...as the barrel would have had to have decelerated you hard enough to slam you into the dash/wheel, hard enough to cause serious injury w/o the bag.

As the barrel probably didn't decelerate you at all, based on your description of the event (Didn't even feel it hit), the bags would have stayed packed etc.

The bumper, fascia, grill, etc, are typically what the barrel eats though...and that's what the Hefty saved you from replacing...plus any radiator damage, etc.

If it had been a deer, or larger heaver object, the bumper would have saved even more, maybe even kept it from being totaled, etc....but even deer, etc, don't decelerate you enough to need an air bag deployment. (I should know, I've mowed down too many of them to count...)

A MOOSE, a COW, etc...something that when you hit it, its like hitting a wall, THAT'S when the bags go off.

I had a steering wheel bag go off on me a few years ago when some chick late for work turned across three lanes of traffic w/o warning, and got t-boned by me and the car to my left, and to my right, plus, she went head on into a car in the driveway she was trying to pull into...

..The bag went off like a shotgun blast to the chest, cracking a few of my ribs...the company car I was in was totaled (Stock mistubishi on that one), as was every car in the accident.

NO ONE was seriously hurt though, the air bags went off like clock-work, and despite totaling 5 cars, we all walked away.
