Passed my test this morning for Technician class. Now I just need to get my call sign. Anybody know of a mobile unit that can receive on ANY frequency and just transmit on 2m and 70cm? Or transmit on quad? I'd like to be able to listen on other frequencies.

In my experience, which is fairly limited since I'm new, if a ham radio can receive can typically broadcast on the frequency (with exception if broadcast FM). But your bigger problem is that you're going to have a huge array of antennas that you'll need to receive on all frequencies that you won't be able to do very effectively as far as a good wideband radio I would say the one that I bought it's a TH 9800 pretty good 50W radio that can receive and send on 10 m 6 m 2 m and 70 cm.

Ah good point. Didnt think about the antenna factor.

Very happy with it. There is a great repeater network here and I can talk all over the metro. It is nice to have the ability to tx at 75w if I need to get the signal out. Right now I have a 5/8 wave (I think) whip on a mag-mount on my roof. will have to do something different if I end up with a better roof rack. I have a nice pass through NMO mount if I can ever figure out where I want it to be mounted, and can get the courage to drill a 3/4" hole in my roof.

Nice. There's a great repeater system here too and i can drive around with my HT and get on the repeater no problem. Have you dabbled with APRS or any of the other technologies?

If anyone is interested, there's an overlander net that we set up for Overland Bound going on on Echolink. USA-GNG Grits-n-Gravy node hosts. Tonight's net control is WD6TED, Ted. Just a little net that deals with overlanding, off-roading, ham radio, and many more topics. It's a good way to get your feet wet with talking on the "air" and always a good time.

If you're not a ham, you can listen in here: www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/29437/web

Middle daughter went with me to the Hamfest today and to help support the Roanoke club, I put $20 into their raffle. Kaylee got excited about winning something and I told her that if we won a radio, she had to get her license and it'd be hers.

Well, she wound up winning a FT-60R! And now I've got to get her a manual to study and maybe I'll have another ham in the house!

Nice! I honestly had no idea there was a HAM thread here

KD2JQH here, but my quad wave has been out of the X now for about 2 years due to having to run a new Antenna wire and I dont feel like breaking my Diamond Antenna on the trails (Not very giving to branches)

I gave up on my quad-band and went with a TM-D710G and a cheapo Tram 1/4 wave nmo that won't hurt my feelings if I snap it off on the trail.

A buddy of mine won a Icom IC-7300 at Berryville today! That's an awesome prize!

I struck out though. Couldn't even find a Tech license manual for my daughter...

Are classes necessary or can I get the book, study it and take the test? Closest classes to me are 45 miles

You don't need to take a class, especially if just taking the Tech - but I'm sure it's a good way to meet the local people/crew.

Honestly don't even need the books - you can use the "flash card" apps to study. The books are nice to get a bit more depth/background though.

I used and like HamStudy. Bought the Tech study guide and practice exam books as well, I though they were a good investment.

I recommend reading the book myself! It's got a lot of good info to help you understand the theory behind what you're learning and can help you be a better ham and understand some of the intricacies that the old timers "get hung up on".

I also think you should be mildly active in a club. You'll have quite a bit of fun and learn a lot to make communicating with ham radio more effective for you!

Ham study guide, flash cards works.. Having book does help allot.. to learn the rules, lingo, as with a good book to have laying around.

like mentioned.. start looking for your Repeaters in area.. Write down those Freq & Tones.. As with finding clubs, Ares. When they do Net's. Most will pick a weekly night.. at Say 19:00 On Repeater Alpha.. You can alway's buy a $25.00 Radio Add Freq, listen into the nets. Start learning the patterns and lingo..
Fun to have I tend to check in on the Daily HF Emergency Net for my area.. As with local nets.
