GoPro camera's

First Fill-Up (of many)
Well for my anniversary my wife got us a GoPro3 Black, and of course you gotta start modding. I've been hearing that its a good idea to get the tether kit they sell, so I went ahead a just built my own set of tethers, just ignore all the birthday background it was my sons 2yr party yesterday.

I made three tethers: 4', 2', and 1'. I used 1/16" vinyl coated cable, cable crimps to make the loops and finally to protect the pain of whatever I put the camera on, I Plasti-Diped each loop.

If anyone has any other good ideas of things todo let me know.

Question from someone who doesn't own a GoPro...

Are the tethers intended to hang onto the camera in the event the mount being used breaks away from whatever it is attached to?

X2 on this. I'd like to see how this system would work!

I JUST ordered a Sony action cam so I would like some advice and pointers on this as well.

Yes, say the camera get knocked off by a tree limb while running some trails, you won't loose the camera it'll be hanging off the tether. It's just like a safety leash.

Here are some better pictures of the tethers:

Day two of modding:
Since the little screw handle all look just a like I painted the one odd ball. The odd one out is used to attach the actual camera to the mounting system, and the handle for it is longer that way it'll reach out from under the camera.

Picture above you can see the longer painted screw and the shorter one next to it. This just helps in quick field changes not to get them switched.

I also hear that the screw are just pressed into the plastic knob and try can work loose, so to combat this I used super glue and glued them into place while they are still tight:

Buy the hero 3+ with wifi so you can have a live* stream running to your device of choice, you can see your shot before you record and you can remotely start and stop recording.

X2. Seeing what you're recording, or going to record is really handy. The Sony Action Cam has that feature as well. I haven't used a GoPro really but I would imagine they're very similar. The only thing, the options for mounts and other accessories for the GoPro would be much greater than that of the Sony.. I still love mine though :)

I want a GP3 so BAD!!!!!

I like to use shots keeping part of the truck in frame. Gives a nice perspective. Not a fan of shots with nothing but trail in view.

i love mine. Haven't used on the trails yet. Hopefully this Saturday..... I put a little sticky mount on my grill "mouth" area... Looking forward to getting the "live" feed from there. Should be a great angle...

I have a go pro hero3 white edition and I love that thing. I think the tether mount is a great idea for the suction cup where it's not permanently attached. I have two permanent attachments on the front bumper and rear door right in the middle of it. They are sturdy as hell. Luckily I haven't had an issue of where my go pro was knocked loose. But ya never know :)

I'm drooling over the GoPro's, but haven't decided to buy yet. Didn't help my local Wal-mart had a big display of them so I actually got to see how freaking tiny it is in person.

Kinda thinking of the Polaroid action cam as well, a lot cheaper, but not nearly as versatile.

I have a GP3 too and one thing I didn't see mentioned here is that along with being able to control and see your camera's view with the wifi option either on your phone or ipad you can also playback the footage as well. I use my ipad and I can watch the footage I just recorded while out on a trail if I want and I can also import the footage straight into my ipad album through wifi for editing in iMovie or whatever so it is pretty cool. Especially if you are on the go

Wifi does eat battery though...
Said the new gp3 has a better time handling it. I bought 3 extra batteries in eBay..

Yes. Get a USB extension cord and mount it anywhere you want. The USB cable is thin enough to be able to have a door or hatch close on it and the weather stripping still work. I do this with mine and the battery backpack. Lasts all day in Moab and Colorado on one battery. I also use a generic 2.1 amp USB cig lighter charger to plug into.

Can you share a photo of this?

This shows the cable coming from the basket to the camera.

It is just a 10 ft USB extension cable plugged into a cigarette lighter USB port. The USB charger for the gopro is plugged into the other end. I had it routed to the back passenger door and up to the rack & basket. Ziptied in place.

My USB is plugged into the center console power outlet.

To run the cable, open your door, run the cable between the cab and the door by the hinges, shut door. Its that simple. Its not permanent by drilling holes. The USB cable is thin enough that the weather stripping on the door will seal around it and keep the elements out.

You could do the same with the rear power outlet and run the cable between the hatch and body.

Outside of the cab, the cable is run up the door frame to the roof. It is then zip tied onto the roof rack.

I did the same with the CB antennae. All you see on the cab is a short run of cable from the top of the door to the roof rack.

The back door works better than the front on the first gen.
