Gen1 and Gen2 Roof racks and Molle Panels

It's my first post here, and I haven't seen a right place to address the following, any suggestions?

After selling a few Gen2 rear side window Molle Panels for Gen2, just a couple of Gen1 panels sold too, but I think there should be more interested Gen1 people out there!

gen1mollegray.jpg

The above is for Gen1, it's a different shape for Gen2. It attaches with the upper right hole being used with a Gen2 hook (yes you need to get the metal hook from Gen2, I still have a few for $10 each. They replace the plastic "hook" that Gen1 has just above each window, and 2 by rear hatch door)

Our website is http://www.roxterra.com/ for any Gen1 and Gen2 people interested in roof racks, Molle panels, soon hopefully Gen2 sliders...

I've been eyeing the rear molle panel. I was one of the beta tester volunteers and had been PMing you on TNX, but then I got banned for declining to kiss the rings.

At some point I'm definitely doing one that's either blank or a custom name - just don't know what yet.

Yes, that's where it all started... here is a link to the history on TNX for those who are curious... reviews, others' photos:
https://www.thenewx.org/threads/mps-rear-side-window-molle-for-xterra.279208/

Now they're laser cut, both Gen2 and Gen1. They used to be Plasma cut which made them a little rough around the edges. Mine was the first one (and second one) and you can see the hole starting point on the backside (shown below).

Plasma cut from before:

Whenever you'e ready...

Recently I thought it would be cool to paint one in camo color, someone has to like it enough to buy it sooner or later (I like my light colored ones), so in my research you need a stencil (like a piece of metal with holes), then you spray one color everything, spray through the stencil for other colors. And "natural stencils" like twigs, fern shaped things can work, but I visualize a mess trying it "naturally".

Good stuff. A little worried about the toughness of the paint upon first impression, but will hopefully be installing this afternoon.

Got it installed. Seems very secure — no concerns there. I do regret paying to get it painted... to install it you have to repeatedly put it up and take it down and the paint got all torn up. It also needed a couple washers for the bottom mounts because they weren’t quite high enough, and I couldn’t use the metal backing plates on the front/right two screws because of the fins behind the plastic for rigidity. The screw ended up right next to them and the hole was drilled too far inward to fit.

Pretty happy overall, though wish I’d thought about the paint situation before paying for that extra. 95DD9F4F-2D0A-4A66-B45A-7CC1A0E17D38.jpegE68F54E9-26F3-4F28-94E7-B1D1EC20EC74.jpeg36D01D16-B8A0-4154-831D-1704103B90EB.jpeg8A5BC8EE-3E5A-4378-B20A-2F5EBA1FDFB0.jpegBA22EEFE-DFA5-47B1-8026-9977E6E82BFE.jpeg103F50FD-C55B-49E4-8DBB-93559048EC52.jpeg

@roXterra1 @roxterra have you considered a rear door molle panel without the little hole cutout for the RF system? For aesthetic reasons obviously, but looks like a bit of a safety risk. I’d be getting the panel to attach a cup holder for my kid (lower one is tough to reach), but I can see the points of the speaker cutout snagging clothing or scraping skin, especially in a tight parking spot where the door can’t open all the way.

@ffxcores yes that pointy 2 spots could be made into a circle for a new design now
For you, since you don't have the speakers there, it could be made into an area with more Molle panel holes instead of any round cutout. As long as you understand that if you try moving it to 2010+ Xterra, the tweeter speaker would be partially covered, which may or may not be an issue.
The price now is $110 each includes shipping, powder coating $30 each
Steel prices keep going up among other things.

Powder coating is the way to go for abrasion resistance, and particularly glossier, shinier powder, as well as hammered or textured.

For me the window Molle panels have only regular (silver) paint. All adjustments have been done without removing the panel.
My door panels all have matte black powder coat, looks nice, I didn't want the glossier color. Also never removed in between bag installs.

This the hammered black we use on racks all the time, never on panels yet, but it would be better for abrasion on panels too.
(permanent Thule holders on the left and temporary ones showing without a bolt that would hold them. New design of these has side walls too, so that the bolts can go left to right or from top, owner choice)

So $110 for the above but with a molle section instead of the cutout for the tweeter? I’m a 2015 but no RF system so it’s just flat. If that can get filled in like you describe I’m in for one. Loving my rear window molle.

Yes $110, give me under a week and I will check in then.
In the meantime think about the driver side Molle panel, I find mine very useful, it's short on the 2015 with the big door bulge from factory, but mine are quite useful. The black one in the picture is attached too, that's where my garbage items go, inside a grocery plastic bag. I have some "irregular ones" with different holes or bigger holes than latest version, $60-$70 for those, I will have pictures later (latest ones are $110)

All of these door panels include
6 jack nuts, jack nut tool, 10-24 bolts, locking washers, 3/8" spacers, all you need for mounting (besides a drill and screwdriver to install)

Perfect. Looks great and install was really easy. Cup holder and a pouch arrive tomorrow. Has four coats of paint total with top two being Rustoleum Matte Hammered Black.

Looks great @ffxcores nice paint job!

I have some earlier models for 2015 front, I can send pictures, near half price… different contour or bigger bolt holes (fixed with a washer)

FYI to others, 2015 has only half the room for a Molle panels from previous years. All trims or just some? My pro4x has only half room.

@Zack. that's a great question, I only saw one manual window setup and these panels won't fit unfortunately.

If you were local to Tucson/Phoenix or coming down, I would say let's make some, even though the market need would be very limited. Without hands on though, it's hard.

I have done (and recently) some modeling with remote Subaru owners, having them model a window and email me pictures and dimensions,

but...
those handles moving and the panel needing to let the handle move and keep a large circle of unrestricted area, that may not make an ideal product.

I just installed the slim aluminum rack with mesh, so I thought I'd give it a quick review...

Service was excellent, it was less than three weeks from order to delivery, and Robert kept me up-to-date on the progress the entire way.

Construction and finish were outstanding, the welds were beautiful and the powder coat perfect. Installation was simple (no helper needed), the only frustration was that my fat fingers made starting the lower nuts challenging- it wasn't bad enough to warrant cursing, though. The fit is tight, no vibrations or wind noise.

The rack is unobtrusive, which is what I wanted. I had no difficulty attaching the Rotopax can holders to the mesh, which solved a minor problem for me since carrying the Rotopax cans on my rear-mounted spare made it impossible to open the tailgate. I now have no concerns about dinging up the roof of the X by carrying stuff up top.

I really recommend this rack, it is everything I was hoping it would be. I am apparently Roberts first New Mexico customer- quietly
proud...

2015 Xterra short door panels
(not enough room for the longer version door panel)

1 and 216 were prototypes but they look pretty close to the final product (without a number)

$65 shipped for either of those 2, fits either side, letter R would be facing the "wrong way" on the passenger side
$115 shipped for final version, R in right direction

Comes with 6 jack nuts (installed from inside, no need to remove the door panel,
jack nut tool
spacers to lift the metal off the plastic
locking washers
bolts
(all you need except for drill and screwdriver, and marker)

Anyone interested? @ffxcores ?

Install directions:

What to put there?
Amazon pouches, bandaids, pens, receipts, plastic bags

Long door version (for Gen2) are available too, as are rear doors

Hmmm… so 216 is fairly close to the final thing? I can see a couple holes missing and that’s no big deal at all. If it were misaligned or anything where it’d be touching or something that would bug me. But if it just doesn’t fill it up all the way I could go for that.

I’m contemplating also getting a panel for the passenger side back cargo window too.
