Here’s my build/rescue thread getting me to this point. Purchased in Feb 2017 for $2300.

Vnf5Q1v.jpg

It came with a PML, 265/75/16 BFGs, MB wheels, and some nice tint on the windows. It had a salvage title and I knew it had been in an accident with front end damage. From what I could see, all had been repaired. It had a pull to the left which I thought would be fixed with an alignment.

Brought it to a garage shortly after the purchase to have the oil changed, tires rotated, and the alignment done. It couldn’t be brought into spec. It was just a regular garage and the alignment guy was complaining about the bigger tires, but he did some quick measurements and claimed the driver control arms were welded off by about a half inch.

In March I noticed some spots in the driveway. Climbed underneath and saw fluid all around the bell housing and slave cylinder. Went with the easy fix first and replaced the slave cylinder. No luck. Brought it to a garage and found the rear main seal was leaking, and oh yeah, the clutch was bad. Got both replaced plus the oil pan seal…$900.

In April we had a warm day and the AC didn’t work. Brought it back to the garage. They found some installation and wiring issues from whatever butcher shop fixed things before, vacuumed the lines and re-charged the AC…$350

During this time, the check engine light came on. Ran the codes and found the front CATS were bad. The shop quoted me in the range of $1500 to replace with OEM. Nope, not spending that. But, my budget was getting blown with other expenses. Had to go with eBay special long tube headers and secondary cats. No money for Thorleys.

yMP50O5.jpg

Replaced both downstream O2 sensors, all studs and nuts, plus had to purchase a few essential tools to get the job done…$600 (minus $110 from scrapping the four CATS)

Through all the above repairs, did a few minor things such as baffle, rear sway bar, and nerf bar delete. Added new crystal clear ANZO headlights ($100) and bought various pieces of needed recovery gear and a full-size spare from a junkyard.

Now to tackle the front end. Still pulling left plus tire rub issues when turning left and hitting a bump. Not to mention I didn’t have full range of turning radius when going right, and hard right turns made the driver’s tire roll onto the outside sidewall and chirp on the pavement. I went to a collision shop. They took a look and said they needed to pull the frame. Left it with them and they gave it a yank…$800

When I picked it up they said it needed new front shocks and tie rods. The truck drove better, no more tire rub, but it still pulled hard left, couldn’t be aligned to spec, and still had the issues turning right.

Got the parts, plus decided to get new pads and rotors while I was at it…$250

Brought it back and they installed everything and tried to get it within spec. No luck. We took a look and could see the cross member was quite bent. Made an appointment to bring it back in a couple weeks so they could put in a new cross member and yank the frame again. I dropped it off Dec 4, 2017. After a couple weeks, the shop called. They pulled with their equipment, they brought it to a couple other shops with bigger gear, no luck. Next option, order a new piece of frame for the front, pull everything to cut out the bad and weld in the new. Sounded expensive, but the shop wanted to do right as I’d already spent a bunch trying to fix it based on what they recommended. They quoted $1400 which included the previous work installing the shocks, brakes, and tie rods, I said go. Here’s the chunk of frame they cut out.

GngwpGO.jpg

I got it back on Jan 5, 2018. The new frame is in, they needed to replace the driver side LCA and motor mount as well (no charge). They said the water pump has a small leak but nothing major at the moment, and ball joints will need to be done soon. Next project. (Did the ball joints myself, had the shop do water pump and timing belt).

So about $4200 in repairs, but now I have an X with cold AC, no leaks, smooth shifting, no CELs, and it drives down the road straight…priceless!

Now that I’ve got a pretty much mechanically sound truck, sure do wish I had money left over for MODS. Some day.

**Edit, Jan 2018**

Light mods since we had some warm weather. Small amp installed under the front passenger seat. I won't be winning any bass competitions, but it sounds better than stock. Added some universal fit seat covers, not perfect but not bad for $20.

**Edit, May 2018**

Tired of my spare tire taking up the cargo space. Decided to build a box for the back. Got the spare tire upright, and built a drawer. I added a lock box and mounted a fire extinguisher to the left of the spare tire. The drawer is plenty big, got a couple folding chairs in there plus recovery gear, scissor jack, jumper cables and a couple other odds and ends. The green bag in the photo is most important, fishing gear. The pole fits nicely by the lock box. Now I have space on top of the box for loading needed gear.

**Edit, June 2018**

Don't mind the dirt, haven't washed it yet from my last trip. Added a set of AVM manual hubs. Super easy install. I picked them up from eBay with all the hardware included.

**Edit, July 2018**

ShrockWorks sliders being installed at the campsite July 6 evening, thanks to Brian G. Picked them up on my way to Potomac State Forest near Oakland, MD. Put them on before a trail ride the next day. Used them twice on the trail, a worthwhile investment!

**Edit, Sep 2018. Look at all my goodies!**

Splurged on some items. Still waiting on my damn Calmini order placed in July, when that shows up I'll do the idler arm, center link, and torsion bars.

Comm Gear - 3ft Firestik, antenna spring, body mount, and Fire-ring cable

Recovery Gear - Xbull traction boards and a tree saver strap

Steering Gear - idler arm and center link

Suspension Gear - rear Rancho shocks and 4x4 parts HD torsion bars (thanks @Rhaas)

**Edit, Oct 2018. Fresh set of tires**

Sucks to have to do that level of restoration for a new-to-you vehicle, but you got a solid base for what you want to do now.

I'll agree with others that it sucks to have had to do that much work on it, but good for you in sticking with it. Looking forward to what you get to do with for fun.

I thought about cutting my losses, but kept thinking " I just paid $$$ to fix XXX, can't dump it now". If the major frame repair was found first, I probably would have moved on. Unfortunately that came after all the other work. I actually had fun doing the exhaust, hadn't tackled anything like that before. I'm thinking I'll do the ball joints myself too, looks easy enough and I can borrow the needed tools from Advance.

**edit** I did do all the ball joints. Quite easy actually, the press from Advance made it simple.

Muadeeb, the release for the fire extinguisher is on top. When you open the rear door, you can reach in with either hand, pop the release and take it out.

BEEFY, yeah, the upright only works because I have a stock spare. I'm not even sure if the KO2s I have would fit. Eventually I'll have a rear tire carrier, then can re-work the space where the spare is.

OP updated, splurged on some gear and new tires. BTW, why are all my photos posting in a smaller size than before?

I finished getting all my new goodies installed this week. I am still waiting on Calmini parts, but with the new tires I wanted to get the center link, torsion bars, and idler arm in so I could get an alignment and not start an uneven wear pattern. Put the parts in on Monday and got the alignment yesterday. It's driving great!

So, despite all the bad reviews, I attempted to order from Calmini. I like the Calmini style IAB, so decided to order that and rear shackles. July 2018, order submitted. Insert told you so now. I made calls every three weeks, parts were almost out the door, or customer service said he would get on his guys right away everytime I called. In Dec 2018, I threw in the towel and cancelled. Commence my three week call schedule to get refunded. Finally, March 2019 my eight month saga ended, refund!

I immediately went to 4x4parts.com and ordered shackles, March 10. March 18, shipped! March 20 at the door! Yup, you all told me, should have listened. Just need a free day for the install to get rid of my DIY frankenstein shackles it came with.

These things are beefy.

So what should I know when going to put these on? What PITA level am I dealing with? Will the old hardware be rust welded in? All I need to do is lift the axle to relieve the spring load and I'm good to go right?

See, I never had issues with Calmini. Called them to order, parts came in about a week.

At any rate.

The shackles are a easy. Just remember that on the factory shackles are two pieces. A flange on one side and the other side and bolt sleeves are all one piece.

One of mine were rust-welded to the spring when I had to replace my springs last year. I ended up torching out the rubber to get the shackle off, but the steel sleeve was what was froze. Lots of heat, pliers, and twisting but I got it off. Hopefully you don't have that kind of trouble.

Well... this happened...

Dec 27th, visiting family for Christmas in Downeast Maine. Light rain started and two mins later we hit a patch of black ice, immediately broke traction. The truck spun and we went backwards for about 100 ft until going off the road into the ditch. Driver side tires caught and we rolled, ending up smashed into some trees. We're pretty sure we only rolled once. Front seat passenger and driver side rear passenger were shaken, but not a scratch. You can see the driver door took the worst of it, which is fine by me as the passengers were my kids. I came out with some great bruises, some cuts and scrapes to my upper left arm, and the worst of it, some cracked ribs. We walked away...wear your seat belts! The outcome would have been much different had we not been wearing them.

So yeah, the truck is beyond repair, totaled it and left it with the tow company. If I wasn't more than 700 miles from home, I would have stripped as much as I could; tires, rims, rock sliders at the least. But, not an option given the situation. My nice new DIY roof rack was spread all over the ditch along with the Yakima ski box I had just added. Skis survived, just had one ski pole get bent so can't complain there.

All is good though, because today, this happened. Found a 2010 S locally for $8k. Has 122K miles on it and is super clean. Very nice truck, have only driven about 30 miles today but it's great. Totally stock, except for a Pioneer aftermarket head unit. Time to start a new build thread and learn all about these Gen 2s.

The first thing I would do with the new xterra is either the bypass or new radiator.

Holy shiat! Glad you guys are OK. That's crazy damage for no injuries. You're definitely right about the belts. I had a T-bone about 17 years ago where a seatbelt saved my life. I'll never get in a car without one.

Congrats on the new X. Looks Clean!

Nah. 2010 is solid. Nothing to do but drive it.

It's good to hear everyone's okay :), that suck's for the X after all that you did . Man that 10 look's clean, I think I've owned every color vehicle but red and yellow. If I paint mine orange would that count as a red and a yellow ? Can't wait to see the Mod's...........

Ouch! Glad to hear you all are ok. I can handle a wreck with myself, and even my wife in the truck, but wrecking, especially a rollover with my kid in the rig TERRIFIES me. Sorry for the loss of the 1st gen, but I'm glad to welcome the 2nd gen to the fam!
