Way late in posting this! My two year assignment in Moldova ended in September and my next assignment is Bern, Switzerland. Rather than shipping my truck, I decided to take a week and drive.

My trip started 7 Sep, 2024, but not without some last minute drama. A week before leaving the driver side rear axle bearing started making noise and had some play. We spent a few days calling all the parts places we could and finally found a bearing in Ukraine. Through a network of busses and couriers we got the part in hand about 11pm Friday night. At 7am the next morning one of the Embassy mechanics was helping to replace it but couldn't get the old bearing off the axle. We brought it to a nearby shop that had a press but they weren't confident they could get the bearing ring retainer off without damage. Since we didn't have another, we opted to put it back together.

I started later than planned but day one I made it to Ludus, Romania driving through Bicaz Gorge on the way.

Day two (8 Sep) I drove to Pecs, Hungary passing through a small part of Serbia on the way. Nothing too exciting on the day, there was a nice church outside my hotel in Romania. I bumped in to some U.S. Army at a rest stop which gave me a chance to show off the going away gift my Defense Attaché Ops Chief gave me. They were a bit surprised.

Day three (9 Sep) was all rain. I drove to Worthersee, Austria passing through Croatia and Slovenia on the way. I went through so many tunnels totaling about 12 miles by the end of the day. Stayed at a nice lakeside hotel with great mountain views.

Day four (10 Sep) took me into Switzerland passing through Italy. I drove through the Alps and saw some beautiful countryside on the way.

I stayed in the small mountain village of Bivio, Switzerland.

Day five (11 Sep) was a short drive into Bern. I went past a beautiful lake and saw a few mountain side churches I'll need to visit.

I met up with one of the Embassy shipping coordinators at a warehouse just outside of Bern and put my truck into hibernation. I'm currently back in Northern Virginia trying to learn German. I have some additional training after language and will head back to Switzerland to start my assignment in July 2025, I'm really looking forward to getting over there and exploring!

That is the coolest road trip! Bet there aren’t a lot of tricked out 4x4s driving around in Europe. Hope your new post is great

Dude, I'm so jealous. How's the C200K standing up?

It’s standing up well and I haven’t been gentle on it. Now that I’m stateside for a bit I’ll get a full set of bearing parts and seals for the repair when I get back.

Was also thinking of picking up a rear half axle to bring as a spare.
