Free anti-virus software that isn't actually malware itself?

There used to be an AVS I had on my Asus that I ran weekly to protect against malware, but I can't remember the name of it to save my life.


Any suggestions? I finally got the Female Unit's laptop cleaned up, now I need to protect it... (I also removed LimeWire..hmmm, I wonder where the malware came from???)

AVG is still free (www.avg.com), but I haven't used the free version since Windows 7 went out of Beta. Microsoft Security Essential (Win 7/Vista) or Defender (8) is better than nothing. Just...

Fortunately for me, she's running Win7 Home Premium, so it's at least somewhat familiar.

Avira is free and works better than anything else I've had. In the past, AVG created problems on my internets.

Malwarebytes is my go-to. Despite its name, it's also a competent antivirus.
