Forum Etiquette for First Names

akinc

Skid Plates
This is something I have been wondering about for a while now. What is the proper forum etiquette for first names?

I don't care at all if my first name is used. If you need to find somebody, it's not that hard these days with the interwebs and all.

Just want to know what everybody else's opinion was on this matter. Sometimes I feel funny typing out the member's user name and not their real name, especially if I have met them in person and spent time with them. In person, nobody calls me akinc. It's always Cory.

Thoughts? Maybe I'm just being trivial........

For me it depends on the person really, some people I know don't mind it while others are particular.
I personally don't care, I mean online people either call me by my screen name or my first name. But even offline, people have been calling me Krash for over 10 years now. I think it's just a matter of personal preference and how well you know the person offline.

I don't care what you call me. If you first meet me and call me Roadwarrior, I'll understand and introduce myself as Tucker. But you probably would know that already from the forms

It depends on the person and how you remember them. I'm a fairly private person online, especially in regards to names, but get me in person and I'm much more open (well, more open). Since thats my mentality, I try to extend that to the other users and keep the veil of anonymity up for them. Last April, Hyde, Macland and myself got together for a weekend and I could not remember to call them "Derek" and "Justin". Partially because I'm bad with names but also because I knew them has "Hyde" and "Mac". My first name is insanely common (its been in the top 10 since I was born) so I have no problem with someone calling me "Deeb" in person or on here.

Now, that said, there are a couple of users here who I do refer to by their name even though I've never met them in person, not even really asked of that was OK.

A lot of us are "friends" on Facebook also.

True, there is Facebook in the mix with real names. Whatever this "Facebook" is anyway; never really heard of it myself.

And instagram . . .
and twitter . . .
and whatever social whoring sites.

Everyone is connected in different ways thee days, so it's a case by case thing. I have one person on a different site that, in one thread, will call me Josh in one post, Obi in the next one, and then obi_krash at the end. So its like they are talking to 3 different people.
Thankfully all my names get along with each other, the meds really help - J/K!!

Yeah, it doesn't matter to me haha ;)

My anonymity is out the window.

What's you name again???

I tried to hide mine with that "ter" but I don't think I did a very good job of it. But feel free to call me "Barrington Silversteensonefski" That's what's on my locker at work....

This. You can compound it for anyone that's been in the military, as we tend to call people by their last names instead...

Also, totally correct, Deeb has an altogether too common first name...he's one of two in bbm, was one of two at the M&G, and if memory serves, at one point, they were both riding together...

Don't care either way. Call me any name you want. I'll either respond or tell you to get bent. Heh

it's bad enough that every time i read a post from you i read it in a "bender" voice, but then you say to get bent? damn. i guess it really is bender..

but, to go back on topic:

i use first names with people i am comfortable with, or people i have seen in person or if we text. i try not to throw them out on here unless if i READ it on here before. i know some people don't want their real names out. but people like bigtim and cameron23 obviously don't care so i will just call them tim and cameron. people like nismofire i won't say her real name. i have never read it on a forum that i know of so i won't be the one to put it out in the open.

also, first name last name thing:
i usually use first vs last unless if there is a good age gap. i am 22 and i am not going to call someone 17-29 mr or miss anything. sorry. but post 30 i will, especially if it's preferred.

This is funny...I am not on facebook or twitter or any of that other BS...so I just know people by their screen names :)

That being said...I have met a number of people in real life from here and clubx...and have their phone numbers in my contacts and everything...

For instance...my cell phone consists of:

"Midget X"
"Sno X"
*screen name* X

etc

A lot of the people I didn't even know their "real" names when I met them...and a lot of them...I recognized them by their Xterra :)

That being said...if your first name is part of your screen name...I think it is a safe assumption you can can use their nam

I think it's funny when I would normally put a persons real name but maybe somebody else doesn't know their real name, only their screen name haha. So you have to use their screen name. Anybody else?

I can see that in a business relationship, but not on a forum. I'm 36, and if you called me Mrs. or ma'am instead of just plain old Torrey on a forum, I'd be annoyed.

And there's the other side of screen names. I didn't really know that you were female. Not that it makes any difference, mind you.

i do it as a sign of respect if i don't know you. as deeb said, i didn't even know you were female so that proves i don't know you. gender makes no difference on respect, but, if i don't know an individual and you treat yourself with respect, i will give you the same respect on how i address you.

I can see your point. I guess I'm just mourning my age. :D
