Fog lights w/ running lights Write Up

hey guys, figured i would do my first official write up!\
this is something i wanted for months until i finally figured out how to do it, and it looks great!
i wanted my Fog lights to be able to come on by them selfs, without the head lights on. i used a current tester to find the right wires, so this is a DIY write up on how to splice your fog light switch (steering column switch w/ blinker thingy)

tools needed:
t-taps, or anything that taps one wire into the other
screw driver
wire strippers
electrical tape
down time of about 1 hour
you must have fog lights for this to work... :p

1.) Remove the steering column cover. It is held together by screws from the bottom.

2.) On the headlight switch side of the column is a mess of wires. Within the mess you'll see
three connectors that we care about at the moment.

- One has 7 wires, one of them being red with a black stripe.

- There is a 4 wire connector with a blue/red striped wire

- There is a 2-wire connector with a red/black striped wire. The red/ black wire should be running between the 7 and 2 wire connectors.

3.) Disconnect the red/black wire from the 7-wire connector, close to the connector.
It should now be connected only at the 2-wire connector end.

4.) Connect the free end of the red/black wire to the blue/red wire in the 4-wire connector using one of the many available tap connectors (Radio Shack #64-3052 for example).

5.) Tape up the remaining stub of the red/black wire.

6.) Reassemble the column.

here's a picture of what that means.

it should look like this (really old picture)

throw some 3000K HID's in there so they actually work as FOG lights, and youll be set!

I just did this mod on my 2004 today. I also do not have a red/black stripe wire on the 7 wire connector. I looked over the wiring diagram for a while and realized I didn't need to do anything with the 7 wire connector. All I did was cut the red/black stripe wire going to the 2 wire connector (mine was white plastic with a foam wrap over it) the tape the end of the cut wire that goes into the wiring harness. Next, the end of the red/black stripe wire that goes to the connector is tapped into the blue/red stripe wire from the 4 wire connector. If you look closely at the next to last picture in the OP (the one just above the picture with the lights on) it appears to be done this way. The red/black stripe wire going to the 2 wire connector is the power input for the fog light switch. The blue/red stripe wire from the 4 wire connector is for the parking/running lights. When the red/black stripe wire is cut then connected to the blue/red stripe wire you can use the factory fog light switch to turn the fog lights on or off any time the parking/running lights are on regardless of headlights being on or not. I hope this cleared things up.

Got'em done. Quick simple mod. I hated the fact that my fog lights would go out when switching to high beams. Now, don't have to worry about it.

Sweet. If I'd known how simple this mod is I would have done it the day I got my Xterra. Well, maybe the day after since it wasn't until the first night with it that I realized I didn't like the factory setup.

the simple basis will work idk if the wires are the same but you should be able to reroute power to your fogs from your headlights no problem

I have a small issue......I did this and now my right headlight turns on with the parking lights and my fog lights don't come on at all.

This tells me I cut the correct wire but the blue/red is wrong.......help?

Edit: never mind........turns out I was trying to use the wrong side of the cut......oops.

So if you ever feel like having just you're right headlight on with the parking lights......connect to the side of the cut that runs into the other bundle......
