FLAT TOWING A 2007 XTERRA

Shadow

Test Drive
Hi , I want to FLAT TOW my 2007 xterra (with automatic trans) without removing the driveshaft. Question: If I leave the engine running while I tow it will that provide sufficient lubrication for the transmission? If you have done this please let me know how it worked for you. I have done this with my 88 Ford Bronco 2 in the past for thousands of miles without any issue -- and -- the data said that flat towing the Bronco would damage the transmission. Running the engine while towing did not damage the transmission. . Your comments are appreciated. Cheers, Allan Clarke, in Kelowna British Columbia Canada.

The theory is sound enough.

You SHOULD have pressure lubrication through the transmission. I don't have a fluid diagram for it to prove that it would lubricate in neutral though.

Also, if something was to happen to the engine while towing like the thermostat stick you could run ruin the engine.

Those would be my concerns.
