Fender Protectors?

I might've emailed John about this but I don't remember. Plus, maybe we can get a group of people wanting them as well?

THE IDEA:
Of course, we see land cruisers and tundras with fender protectors on the ARB bumpers, but I'm wanting to expand this idea to the group, but mainly to Nissan XTERRAs.

MY CONCEPT:
I have an 04 Xterra with WKOR Sliders and an ARB Bumper. Maybe instead of welding into the frames of the two (ARB and WKOR Sliders), we can make a latch or something similar to a "hand" and screw into the pieces of the slider and the bumper; something similar to what the ARB/TJM Bumpers have, but ALSO on the sliders.

Has anyone else thought of this? Obviously, welding would be easier, but if I decide to sell certain parts in the near future,(ex: my ARB Bumper), it'd be hard to disassemble making it only one big piece.

I'm REALLY REALLY wanting these, and I'm thinking RLC could be our best bet considering its a local shop (1.5 hours away from me/<4 hours for some) and that they've worked with XTERRAs in the past.

I've thought about it before, I want to connect my sliders with the front and rear bumpers (when that happens) and wanted to find a way to connect them. I think I may have a plate welded on to the end of the tube so I can bolt it to said object.

Ben, yes. Something like that! I was trying to figure out a way to describe it, but I guess a coupler would work.

Road Warrior, I wanted to do something like that as well, but can't seem to find anyone who does tube bumpers for XTERRAs.

Casper, glad to see you on here. You have one of the sickest X's I've ever seen. Anyways, I didn't think of that factor. Hopefully RLC will be able to brew something up.

No one really makes them, they are custom one off pieces for the most part. Addicted offroad has one, and I know that Xterror04 put a toyota bumper on the front of his truck, so the are out there, but you have to do a little searching and a little fabrication. I figured that if I was getting one built that it would be easy enough to just loop a tube over the fenders and attach it.

It would be a one-off due to the numbers of different sliders and bumpers...2" BL, 3" BL and no BL, and so forth.

That's a lot of variables.

The way out would be to simply have ONE maker sell the entire package...with the few variations (Slotted, multi-holed, etc...?) built into the items to allow adjustability; Much like Shrockworks made the bumpers to be able to be used with or without a BL by including holes for both versions, etc.

IE: Bumpers, sliders, fender bars, roll bars, or whatever...in a modular format.

Gotcha. Looks like I'll just have to get something brewed up for something custom at RLC. But I think a total packaged deal would definitely attract more buyers into RLC if John had something like this.

Yea, it's a pretty cool take on the idea, this isn't mine. But this guy mounted the back part to the door hinge mounts and tired both sides together with a cross bar.

As you can see from my passenger fender I could use some of these, lol

To get any real strength you need a hoop that goes over the cowel and is tied into the frame on both sides. The ones that you see on stuff in Aus. flex a ton when you put any load on them.

yea, but not everyone want or has the means to weld onto the frame. That setup up their looks like it would be way better than mangling fenders all the time.

I look at them like brush guards, or steprails. If they arnt strong enough to do the job then they are just one more thing that is in the way.

If you ran them double tube like the pic here all the way from bumper around to sliders they would be plenty strong enough to take some hits. It's really no different then of you were to hit a tube bumper on something there is nothing keeping the sides from bending in aside from the metal strength. You would have to smack a tree pretty damn hard to need them to be braced across the cowl. if you're going to do all that bracing then you may as well go full exo cage.

Or at least that's how I look at it

Like this guy did, if you can tie both fenders together at the door hinges with a cross tube, it seems to me that it would be plenty strong enough to take a good hit. I think of it this way, the sum of the parts are stronger than the individual pieces. True enough, mounting to the hinge alone wouldn't be enough, but you start tying all parts together you create a single super structure.

I just thought about another reason for these rails if I ever go through with them.

They can be used as step rails in conduction with the painted hood. I was stuck once at an angle favoring the drivers side. I couldn't get on top or go around, I had to travel from one side to the other from the cabin. :(
