Bump for more ideas on things you guys might want to see. It doesn't have to be something new, either; it can be something that's already out there that you want to see a fresh twist on.

It's been discussed at great length here at the shop, haha.

    Yep...

Sounds good! kchurch86@gmail.com if you prefer that over a PM. I'm good with either.

So, here's an idea. It all depends on what the brightest and most-affordable LEDs I can buy are.

    Any guesses?

I'm looking at building an LED light bar, similar to a Rigid. I'd like to start with trying a fog light LED bar, with yellow LEDs.

Some of you may be familiar with the LED conversion I did on an old bicycle headlight for my rat rod bike project. The headlight uses 8 white LEDs and one green LED (just for a little green hue) and it's remarkably bright for just 9 LEDs. It runs on 12v, and the LEDs are completely water-tight.

I'd like to build an 18" x 4" bar, in which I should be able to fit 96 LEDs pretty easily, and I can get a strip of Lexan through my work for cheap. I'd build a frame to mount all the LEDs in, a separate area behind the LEDs to do all the wiring, a Lexan lens to protect the LEDs, and a multi-position mounting system.

As of right now, if I get the LEDs through Oznium, I'm looking at just under $290 JUST in LEDs. I can make that in overtime on a Saturday pretty easily, so it won't hurt too bad to buy them.

Anybody have any thoughts on this?

Sounds like a good project. I'm intetrested to see how it turns out. Then maybe some fogs.

I fired off an email to Oznium asking if they can give me some more technical info about light output, specifically Lumens.

Seems like a pretty viable option for an LED bar.. give it a shot!!

And as you know from FB, I'm down for a transfer case and transmission shift knob. Other ideas I saw from reading this thread that I'd definitely buy: battery tie-down, winch fairlead, switch panel.

I know there are quite a few companies making them.. but what about hi-lift mounting brackets that fit around the roof rack?

Made this in Solid Edge real quick.. pic quality isn't the best though since its on my laptop lol

Yeah man, I've been playing around with some ideas on stuff pretty similar to that. Hi-lift mounts, light mounts, universal mounts.

Well, I had some free time at work (literally about 2 minutes when the boss wasn't watching) the other day, and drew up an 18" x 2" LED light bar. I can fit way more LEDs in it than I had originally thought. 136 to be exact, and that's without cramming them in and using all available space. 136 brings the cost of this little project up to $408 JUST for LEDs. So...that ain't gonna happen any time soon, haha. Too much coin for a pet project that may not even work.

I think in the next couple of days I'm going to open this thread up and re-post it for all of XN to see, and I'll at least bring it over to NEXterra as well. I don't want to throw it around everywhere all at once, I'd never be able to keep up with fielding questions/comments from all different directions.

I'd like to thank you all for your "pending" (haha) support and interest, and even more for your ideas. I know this is going to take time, and a huge amount of work on my end to make it happen, but I really want it. I want a shop, I want a CNC machine, I want to be able to make these goodies for you guys. I've started typing up a business proposal letter in an effort to help with funding, be it a bank who's unsure if they want to loan me some major coin or a private investor who thinks I may be on to something. All in due time I suppose.

no no no no no! there's a reason that trident/otterbox/etc don't make their cases out of metal, they're SUPPOSED to be the weak point, rather than be rock solid and transfer all of the damaging force/energy/impact through to the device underneath. the only way going metal would work would be if you could rubber line it so that it's a metal version of something like an otterbox commuter series.

ditto, except, I'd rather see a 1:8 scale body so that you could use 2.2's and make it a scaler ;)

good luck on the fab shop, hope it takes off well!

This is very cool, Church. I know how hard it can be to keep up with the daily grind in a machine shop while trying to slide your own projects in after hours. I can help with generating NC code if you want. I have licenses for Wildfire NC, Solidworks/Mastercam, and I can hobble together old skool G-code for the simple stuff. My time is free of charge; I have'nt been on a machine in several years and I welcome the chance to keep my skills fresh.

How 'bout an ashtray made from AL billet in the shape of a 2" thick machine gear. The outer profile could be cut on a waterjet and the interior features could be cut on a milling station. Wrap it up with a custom engraving in the bottom and you could easily sell them for $50+...

Hm, I hadn't thought of that. I've seen plenty of the aluminum hardcases, but never actually seen one OFF of the device until the other day. It was an aluminum iPhone case, which had a couple small pads of rubber glued to the inside of it.

Of course, I'd make mine better than this, but still. ;)

Thanks for bringing this to light dude, I probably wouldn't have thought of it right off the bat.

Thanks for the offer. I'll keep it in mind, though I currently do my own programming at work (conversational programming, I don't do g-code). I have access to a few different CAD/CAM programs.

I like the ashtray idea quite a bit too.

Seriously Dave. Don't make me drive all the way down there to take it off for you just so you can give me the ol' "Well I loosened it" line ;)

If you don't plan on keeping the OEM shift knob.. just cut it in half with a razor blade or a dremel!

Or just ask Kelly to get it for ya :p lol

Seriously though, the transfer case knob was a b!tch to get off on mine.. I twisted the knob over 90 degrees with both hands before the dang thing broke loose.

Just grab it with 2 hands and man up on that thing! haha
