Thanks for bumping this, man. It's been too long since I've posted in here.

Yes, a nice rubber buffer lining the inside of a 2 piece, screw-together case would be essential; as pointed out by dhyde79 a few posts ago.

I've been continuing to play around with more ideas for products, especially universal mounts like what 02Xterra and I talked about earlier...universal mounts that grip around the round roof rack bars and oval ones to go around the cross bars...something that could mount lights, shovels, axes, hi-lifts, racks, whatever you want to mount up there.

I've also been playing around with a floor-mount rack system for the rear cargo area too - something to hold ammo tins, tool boxes, and bicycles mostly.

I still haven't had any time at work to do any of this playing around, and given our current schedule, I don't see any chances in the future to do so. I'm starting to think the only way to make any of this ever happen is to take out a huge personal loan and find shop space to rent and buy a small machine that I can use to produce these goodies. My wife and I have been continuing to work out the possibilities there, so if/when something develops this will be the first place I share the news.

Until then, lets keep the ideas flowing everyone! What else do you nice folks want?

I would love a sturdy well build roof rack mounted locking fishing pole holder that could hold an assembled rod with reel attached if you have ideas let me know

I just discovered this thread. If you're still kicking around the "open my own shop" notion, let me share some insight. I went from having a job making decent money to no job overnight. In the wake of that, myself and the guy I worked with started our own business doing the exact same work. We do home automation, security, home theaters, etc....

That was July of 2011. So almost 2 years later, this is what I've learned about being a business owner.....

Whatever you think its going to cost to get started, triple it. I'm not saying that to discourage you, but getting stuff off the ground is EXPENSIVE. Just in licenses and insurance the initial investment is heavy. And in our cases we really didn't need much in the way of tools since we already owned most of the stuff.

Be prepared to spend more time working than anything else. As the old cliche goes, "Owning a business is great. It means you get to set your own schedule. The problem is deciding which 80 hours a week you want to work." This is a true statement. It does workout sometimes that you have a chance to break away and relax....but between fielding phone calls on the weekend and constantly watching the bank account, you're never really NOT working.

If you're not an accounting wiz-kid....FIND ONE! I'm still trying to make this work, and I've been wearing the "book keeper" hat for almost 2 years now. And it sucks. I want to give this to someone else so bad.

Probably the most important thing.....make sure it worthwhile for you. Its difficult, it sucks sometimes, and you may get to the point of saying "**** it!" Trust me. I've been there. But at the end of the day, I enjoy what I do, I'm good at what I do, and I make really good money doing it. So it can't be all bad. heh. If it works for you, do what you have to do in order to keep it going. Once you have enough going that you can step back and watch it run itself, its really impressive.

I'm not quite there yet....but its getting closer.

Oh, and btw....nice Billet work. You've got skills. If I think of anything that would be good to have, I'll let you know.

Bumping...

Hey you ever thought of making roof rack footings? At least the plate part. For the life of me I can't figure out how to make the curvature of the roof line w/o starting w/ a 1/2" piece of metal and grinding out the curves..
