I searched via Google and via the site and couldn't find a thread, so if there is one please let me know. If you have removed your exterior door moulding, please post your year, trim, and whether there were holes or not. If you know for sure of one even if it's not yours, post that too and I'll update the below list. But please be sure.

Just to be clear, we're talking about these pieces:

The List:
2007 - S - No Hole
2007 - OR - Holes
2010 - X - No Holes
2010 - S - No Hole
2010 - OR - Holes
2012 - X - Holes**
2013 - P4X - Holes
2015 - S - No Holes
2015 - S - Holes
2015 - P4X - Holes

** The photo of the 2012 X looks different than the others. The holes are different shapes and not painted on the inside like others are, leading me to believe that the person installing them drilled them manually.

Regarding Body Side Moldings (I think that's the official name) it might be more complicated than that if they were added by a previous owner or dealer. I think they were an option on some trims / years so I have heard that some have holes / slots if factory installed, others might not have the holes if the moldings were added later.

Here's the official instructions for adding them post factory:

I'm interested in the topic as well because on my '06 OR the leading edge of one of them is beginning to get loose. Trying to decide the best way to re-stick it. Probably 3M double sided tape.

I read somebody say the same thing regarding factory, but I thought at least in later years all the S trims came from the factory with them in place, and I know at least two now that did not have holes. I could see them doing things different by trim (e.g. all Pro-4X have the holes), but for the purposes of streamlining I wouldn't think some S models came with holes and some didn't. Unless of course they did it by factory.

Need Bigger Tires
I mean, to me, it wouldn't make sense to add additional holes to the door if the factory was doing adhesive, that would just introduce more risk of leaks and rust forming for no gain.

Never had to change a window motor/regulator on the xterra but can't you see the holes if you were to take off the cover or whatever its' called. I doubt there is any insulation there.

Never took the time to look when I changed the regulator and motor.

After digging around I'm able to add more to the list above. It seems like the 'Off Road/Pro4X having holes and the rest not' theory is holding up. There was one exception (2012 X trim) but it doesn't look like the factory holes seen on all the other images.

This myth is BUSTED. My 2015 S has holes. So I’m guessing like which 12v outlets are hot vs key, there’s no set rule here as to which doors have holes and which don’t.
