Engine Knock

Just wanted to check with you other 2nd gen owners that live in a colder location. When you first start your X and drive for a few miles, do you notice any loud knocking sounds from the engine? Mine has always had this loud knocking, basically sounds like the engine is gone when I first take off in the morning. I have to drive at least a good 5 miles, but once the engine is warm the sound is gone. Is this normal?

Sounds like the oil hasn't made a full "pass" through the motor before you take off. The colder it gets, the slower the oil moves. That goes with any motor, though, not just the 2nd gen. My 1.5gen is the same way, especially with this cold snap we've had the last 3 days.

Its valve tapping and its normal on the second gens. Metal contracts in cold weather, causing the valves to tick just a little bit. It won't hurt anything, just let it warm up properly and don't get too heavy on the throttle first starting.

Mine does it with only 13,000 miles on it, no worries completely normal.

my 2007 has 113,000 miles, and does the same thing. Loud first few seconds of start up and in cold weather, noticeable for a few miles or so. ALTHOUGH. . . even after long warm up and drive, when I give it gas, like going up a hill, I can hear the knocking, softly but I hear it. Drives me nuts. Always knocks when give it gas JUST WHILE DRIVING. NOT WHEN the truck is in park and i gun the engine. When truck is idling and I have hood up, I cant hear it. Sounds and idles SO smooth and quiet. IS IT just a normal thing on the 2nd Gen like you guys are pointing to, or could it be lifter issue? I change oil every 3,000 miles.
