Engine dies when refueling

My 04 engine dies when refueling. I was letting it idle and engine sputtered badly when fuel cap was removed, but now it dies completely. Takes about 20-30 attempts for it to start after replacing the cap. I can get it in about 12 if I floor the gas pedal. Thoughts as to what I might need to address to fix this problem? Thanks in advance.

you know something like this happened to my father's car. his is an 03 sonata and that was because of a bad purge valve solenoid, a common problem for that model of car. but it sound like you have it worse. when do you normally get gas (what level in the tank) and have you ever serviced the sending until in the tank?

I've fueled at half and one quarter tank with same result. I haven't done any type of servicing other than plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, oil, brakes, tires and timing belt.

So, opened fuel cap at full tank. No problem. Turned off and restarted with fuel cap off and no problem. Clearly this is directly related to fuel level. Any thought as to what I might need to replace...not a mechanic so please, explain...thanks.
