Barrel length makes a difference. And our weapons are classed as either restricted, non-restricted, and prohibited. Non is basically bolt action or semi auto long rifles, restricted is semiauto ar style and pistols, and prohibited is heavy firearms, short barrel weapons, full auto, etc.

non-restricted is you need a license to buy and possess. store unloaded and unfireable (trigger lock or bolt removed and secured), can throw into a vehicle and take somewhere to shoot.

restricted has more strict requirements for storage (gun vault), has to be registered, you are basically only allowed to take it between your registered house and your registered gun range.

military makes no difference for personal firearm ownership.

that pistol looks too small, is likely prohibited up here.
