So my father made the comment my xterra would be sick if I ran a y pipe to two flowmasters and two tail pipes....has this been done before? Im interested in the price and sound.

Here are some videos I found but I would still enjoy others input.
I like this sound...but think super 44's would sound better. Fast forward to 1:20 for exhaust sound

Same xterra, they are cherry bombs

Dual 40's...I like the growl but its almost too quiet.

Yeah im not sure because my stock tail pipe isn't much different than his, but I could always take them in a bit and hug the hitch so its under the metal. Im actually liking the cherry bomb better but at high rpms it sounds bad when the flow master sounds good, and the cherry sounds good at low when the flow master is a bit quiet. Im still thinking lol...I will probably sell my CB if I decide to do this.

I have also thought about doing 1 exhaust now and then adding the 2nd later when I have the money.

I would look at the magnaflow stuff. Also instead of doing a 2 into 1 into 2. Do a pipe from each side of the engine back, with a crossover pipe in there somewhrer. Then so a magnaflow on each side.

Iv been wanting to do this for a long time now and plan to as my project for this summer since I got the spare tire out of the way. I plan on using a Cherry Bomb Extreme like in the vid. As of right now Im thinking just using one dual in dual out muffler rather than two. As far as pricing my local muffler shops told me somewhere in the $300 range.

Well since I'm a broke student I might be choosing the cheaper rough. I would love to straight pipe it from each side of the engine back to a muffler but that would be some $$ for re piping.

Lol yeah

Bimle, in the video the guys uses dual in dual out....would a single in dual out be good? or would that muffle the noise to much

The first two vids are dual in dual out Extremes but Im not sure about the third one. I can't imagine that a single in would affect the noise too much but some one else would prob know better. I was considering just cutting my muffler off and having my brother weld in a single in double out to save some money.

Im in the same boat as you money wise so I feel ya. You could do a single in dual out for fairly inexpensive.

I researched exhaust for a while and I eventually decided that I'm not going to be happy with it unless it's throaty like a V8 and I'm not going to be able to get that. I was spoiled with my stang :(

I absolutely love the throaty sound of the flow master in the last video but its just to quiet, I don't want something really loud but after my brother told me it sounded like a pruis I figured it was time for something to change lol

Right now the muffler Im using is an Xlerator I think its made by AP exhaust. Single in single out. I never heard of it before but my local muffler shop suggested it so I had them put it on and it sounds really throaty and its louder than the 40s in that last vid. Obviously nowhere near a V8 but I was honestly shocked at the sound it puts out.

Il try and get a vid for you this weekend when Im home from school.

That would be great man! I want to upgrade my muffler but have been holding off on the flowmaster 40 cause I thought for it being an upgrade it was a little quiet. Thanks and subbed.

Videos are great....but I have heard the sound changes a bit when the engine is under load instead of just revving it, but I know its hard to take a video while driving lol

True, and good point Aaron. IMO the exhaust sound under no load should at least give an idea of what it will sound like under load.

Yea thats one of the reasons Iv never made a video of me revving it. Il have my brother start from a stop at the end of my street and pull away while I video it or vice versa. Theres always the factor of video quality but it will at least give you a pretty good idea of how it sounds.

Has anyone tried mounting their camera by the exhaust on take off. I have used an old school universal windshield phone mount to mount my camera externally while wheeling. Easy way to catch exhaust sound while under load, though wind noise would have to be taken into account.

I did that on my jeep, duck taped my iPhone to the bumper when I did a video over my dynomax lol. Sometimes it doesn't work due to the wind sound destroying the audio.

Seriously it worked good!
WARNING OFFTOPIC: I actually had the rubber otter box on at the time and I laid my iPhone down on my tail light at lowes cause i had to remove the rear window to make some long pipes fit. Yeah these tail lights...

The phone wedged down just perfect enough and I forgot about it, drove home over speed bumps and all and the little guy held on! I was really lucky considering it was a brand new phone lol.

As I've seen, duals all the way back is a little over excsessive for our engines. I'm all for single in dual out though for the badassness

If you are going 3" thats going to slow down your exhaust flow more buildup in the pipe. (think a garden hose with your finger on it shooting the water at a high rate but not a high volume, now release it, a high volume but not a high rate. Balancing act to get it right)

Personally I'm due for an exhaust, mine fell off at the muff. So I'm straight piping it and it's finally inspection time. Since the NE is covered in salt in the winter, I know I want to change out most of my exhaust.

Was looking at going with the NISMO for two reasons. I'd like a new Y pipe and it's a bolt on. If I were to go custom, id have them make me a new Y pipe, and pipe down to a flow master 40 (maybe something a little quieter) but keeping with the stock piping. With our trucks we really can't pull much out of the engine, but it woundnt hurt to bump up a 1/4 inch.

If you like the idea of a dual tip then get it piped to a single in dual out and have them route the tips to the corners. One thing to keep in mind is location of the right tip. If you wheel just make sure it doesn't get in the way of the stuff back there, and if you wheel like me (do stupid $#!7) your going to have to be careful of two muff tips! Lol (yep bent mine around my AC shackle pinching the pipe flat, hacksaw day!)

Haha it's ear splitting annoying, specially for the rear driver side. They sit right above the break. Seen my gas milage fall too. Just have been doing couple months of exhaust research before pulling the trigger.

You'd be surprised what you get use to with a 45 minute commute every day.

Haha, yeah ill advised. Best advice I can give you, though valid YouTube never gives the experience full effect, but go to an X meet and listen to what others have. I personally can't wait till I have a quiet ride again. Something loud may seem sweet in the youtubes, but you gota remember, can't sneak up to the girls house to a surprise party when they hear your missing exhaust half mile away. Or the simple convos not being yelled on the highway.

Aim for the gurgle and such noise but the one that quiets down at cruising speeds.

There's plenty of ways to make these Xterra's sound good, Even the 3.3L. In my adventures of changing exhaust, I've settled with (AT THE MOMENT) 2.25" dual, from Manifolds to my 70 Flow, Out to 4" IH turndowns (Yes for scrap pipe off rigs!) I've got a good sound, DEEP tone down low, still can hear everyone IF the windows are up. Nice rasp up high and a general okay sound at 70 MPH. My tires are louder than the roar of the exhaust.

I had my windows up and radio on, It's how I ride around. So forgive the radio playing. But you could judge by it, how loud the Xterra is.
Move to around 13 Min mark and you'll have a general Idea of it. (Long video is Long)

I'll stick another couple up later when YouTube decides to accept the fact I wanna upload video.
