Comic Book Movie Thread (SPOILERS)

So I know some of you, like myself, we're raised on these books. And now with this flood of movies coming out, I thought it would be interesting to have a dedicated discussion about them. Something more in depth than, "Dude, Captain America was awesome!" Address the story line, the characters, what made sense and what doesn't compared to the mythology of these characters. A real discussion.

I'd like to kick it off by bringing up a problem that my dad pointed out last night after we saw Winter Soldier.

With the high proliferation of Marvel movies coming out, and the path that they are taking, their ability to maintain something close to the original mythology is going to be stretched thin. And there is going to reach a point where we just end up remaking the origin stories and rebooting the franchise i.e. Amazing Spider-Man.

The only universe I see as being immune to this is X-Men. While some of the characters do cross over into the Avengers universe there is enough solidarity that they could keep making X-Men movies ad nauseum and never run out of original material.

The Avengers, on the other hand, has a problem. There are good story lines, but they include Spider-Man, Wolverine, and several other characters that, at current, reside in a different universe. The only way to include those characters would be a reboot of the series.

This brings me to another point. Ultron. Really? Ultron? Yes. I get it. He's one villain that makes sense given the character setup we have in this incarnation of Avengers. However, an all knowing all seeing robot is a stupid enemy. They could have come up with so many better stories.

I was happy to see Thanos at the end of Thor (at least I think it was Thor). Thanos is a real villain. And one they could use in Avengers.

Speaking of villains. I just realized something. Apocalypse needs to be an X-Men Villain. But since they killed off Cyclops in the 3rd X-Men movie, we can never have X-Factor without a reboot. Because without Scott Summers, there is no Cable. Or no Strythe. As they are both time traveling versions of the child between Cyclops and Jean Grey. Which removes both The X-ecutioners Song and The X-tinction Agenda from viable story lines. Which sucks. But I'm sure as the actors age they'll have to reinvent X-Men as well.

I did approve of what they did with The Punisher movies a few years ago. You had the one origin movie, which wasn't terrible. And then the second one wasn't a sequel, BUT it just assumed that everyone knew who he was and what he was about and told a story. That was a good way to handle it.

By no means is this limited to Marvel movies. Please, let's talk about how much I hate Super Man. Heh. Marvel is just where my greatest familiarity is. So I can talk about it a lot.

I think Marvel made a huge mistake by selling of the rights to spiderman and xmen. By doing so they limited their ability to expand on the universe. I think the xmen more are entertaining (at best) but they didn't hold true to any comics that I've ever read. I think Ultron is kinda gonna be like Winter Solider was in the new Captain America. He's gonna be a main part but I think Thanos is gonna have a part in it as well as the main villian. What makes me mad is they (marvel) can't even use the word mutants which is extremely limiting to the whole universe there are only so many "nonmutant" characters they can bring in. Thanos was at the end of the Avengers

I am excited to see where this discussion goes. After Captain America WS I was able to visit with a guy real quick about this stuff. I have not read any of the comics but I have made a move in the right direction, DVDs containing the entire avengers storyline headed my way.

SPOILERS

My conversation with the guy at the theater brought up the twins at the stinger, are they quicksilver and Scarlett witch, who are in the Avengers 2?

I picked up on Quicksilver. But I didn't realize that was the Scarlett Witch. So, spoiler alert here.

Quicksilver should end up as an Avenger.

I think we should update the thread title to include Marvel:SPOILERS to just do away with saying spoilers while we discuss in this thread, unless you go watch a new movie on opening night and then spew stuff before other people can watch it lol.

I really enjoyed the man of steel movie, Henry Cavill was a great choice for Superman. Batman vs superman is turning into a movie full of stars. I don't know much about dc comics as I just started reading them in the last couple years.

I've never really been into DC. I enjoy the movie versions of Batman. Except the Clooney & Kilmer renditions. Batman is an interesting character just because he's nobody. He's an ordinary guy with deep pockets. Kinda the same reason I like The Punisher. Dark vigilante who kicks people's asses.

Superman is a complete pussy. I hate him with a passion. Man of Steel with unlimited power whose idea of being human is a lowly newspaper reporter that barely has the balls to get with Lois Lane. Unless he's in his Superman costume. Which affects his libido. Not his powers.

Ok... This is a tangled mess..

Spider-Man xmen and the fantastic 4 rights were sold off in the late 80s early 90s. Most were in development hell for the whole 90s..

I'm sure you guys understand all this but for people out of the loop.

Age is the largest killer of these films.. Most of the actors have 3 films in them before they start to look old..

I personally thought the winter soldier was the best out of all the single films. The movie never felt long at all. I this Chris pine captures captain perfectly.. Other that the silly non capt suit..

What I hate about Spider-Man and fantastic 4 I'd how they are following he ultimate universe.

Most of that universe is lame... But I'm a sucker for the traditions the originals. I hate how hairy Osborn looks in the new series's too.. I do feel like this spidey suite is the best of all the films.. It really captures Todd McFarlands look.. The webbing well..

The first ff4 was crap!!! Nothing about that film was good beside the thing .

I'll type of something better when I get to a computwr

Through the lack of spell check that is Dave's post.

Chris Pine is Captain Kirk. So wrong Captain there.

I agree that the ultimate universe is my least favorite as well.

I think the next Spider-Man movie is trying to cram too much into one movie. Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino? Really? Plus it annoys me that they are going straight to Green Goblin with Harry Osborne and completely skipping Norman Osborne. Without his dad as Green Goblin and being killed while fighting Spider-Man, how does Harry get into it?

i agree that this second spiderman seems like a jumbled mess, but i liked the first one better than the other spidermans. i think garfield makes a good spiderman, he's nerdy but still funny like spiderman is supposed to be. i also feel it was really well made. The xmen series really bothers me. they have completely ruined one of my favorite characters, Beast. and the "first class" characters are characters than arent xaviers first team. i'll see all the comic book movies just because i enjoy comics and i like to see how they ruin/put their own spin on characters.
i know its not a movie but has anyone watched Arrow? its a good show that brings a lot of characters in

Well, there was a reason that First Class wasn't the beginning. Because it wouldn't make sense with the way the characters already played out in the earlier movies. I don't necessarily think that they ruined Beast. He was not blue in the original comics. And because of the age, you can make the leap to the character carrying into Kelsey Grammar (Spelling).

Having recently read "Days of Future Past" I'm particularly interested to see how they do that w/ the Movie. Because there were lots of characters that we haven't seen in the movie universe and some ones in the comic that are dead in the movie series.

The two things that are missing from X-Men movies though.....Sentinels and Apocalypse.

Sentinels are in days of future pass. They did ruin Beast they turned him into a hulk like character, he turns blue when his adrenaline is pumping and then reverts back to his normal self. He wasn't blue in the beginning I know but most of his xmen career he's been blue. They could have used the same characters but with younger actors like they did with xavier and magneto

yeah sorry guys... I have been sick in bed all day and trying to type that on my phone is way too hard.

From what I have read about the X-Men movies.. you need to forget about that 3rd turd..
But hey it was better that Wolverine origins WTF there...

The new spiderman movies were rushed... If sony didn't put out a movie they had a chance to loose the rights to spiderman..

I have a feeling though that we could see the universe merge into a whole soon... I feel like that was hinted at the end of CA2..

My bad on the Chris Pine thing.. Chris Evans I think is his name..

The sinister 6 is Spiderman 3.. Which is a total bs move.. Those comics were at Marvels hay day of printed material.
I also love the inferno stuff from back then... Have any of you read the Death of Kraven? That was one of the first all spiderman book mergers.. The story is amazing and Kraven could be a buyable character.. Big game hunter..

I may be hated on this one but the last 2 Iron mans were crap to me... I do not like how they rushed the other suites into the movies...
I know its mostly about toys to sell but geese! I will say that I was never a huge IM fan as a kid...

FF4
WTF is going on here... how are they going to explain her brother as a african america? I haven't kept up with the ultimate sermons and Im guessing this is where the story is coming from? Any ideas? The last 2 movies cast was way too young for me.. All fluff no story.

Hulk.. This is a hard story to make its own franchise. I really like how Edward Norton played the Hulk.. And the story was ok I guess..
Hulk needs the Avengers to me.. He isn't a singular guy i personally want to follow.

Yeah. The Sinister 6 is a waste of a movie. There needs to be a Spider-Man movie with a proper Venom and or Carnage. The guy who played Rorschach in The Watchmen would make a PERFECT Carnage. I absolutely deplore the Venom that was in the one Spider-Man movie. Topher Grace does not an Eddie Brock make. And to kill him off in 45 minutes was BS.
I get that we're supposed to ignore the last X-men movie. And I have no problem doing that.

Yeah thats the major issue with movies... Some of these stories take many many movies to get to the villains...
Im old school so with out secret wars.. you have no symbonite (How ever you spell) and event then you need a full movie of slide in the black suit.

Eddie Brock needs to be a big guy.. He built his body up in rage..

The spicy movies are falling into the Batman (90s) path... Lots of villains and no story

And why I love my wife. I mentioned the Sinister 6 as the villains in a Spider-Man movie. And she rolled her eyes and looked at me and said, "Why? What a waste."

I feel like my childhood was deprived not having comic books in it. I like the new Spider-Man movies because they aren't so campy and I think Garfield is a more believable Spider-Man as well. I completely agree that Harry Osbourne looks a little "One Direction" and they have been packing too many villains in to these Spider Man movies for a while.

I am really looking forward to Guardians of the Galaxy because I have no idea about any of the characters and I feel like they are going to make a surprise hit just based on the fact they had the balls to cast their two biggest stars as characters who aren't human.

I'm vaguely familiar with GoG. The raccoon was a movie addition. The whole thing seems kind campy to me. I might try to dig up some of the books to see what the deal is.

Rocket isn't a movie addition, he's in the comics, I'm not too familiar with them either but I have been reading their newest adventures which are pretty good

The preview I saw at Captain America made it look anything but campy. And if we've learned anything from Marvel it's that they do campy RIGHT. Captain America 1 was campy and it was great, almost like an Indiana Jones movie original, not the crappy sequel we got with Shia Lebeauf.

Rocket raccoon was in other comics.. And has been in the 2008 comics from what I can tell...

I'm really excited for GoG because Gamora, she's such a bad ass in the comics and really ties in Thanos. So I know we will be getting a huge Thanos battle sooner or later

Hrmm... Maybe it was an earlier rendition I was thinking of that didn't have the raccoon. You know since comic books reboot as often as a Windows machine.

Dr. Strange would indeed be interesting. And could bring back the X-tinction Agenda story I mentioned earlier.

Along the same vein. PBS did a 3 part special on comic book superheroes. Aired October of last year. Superheroes: A Never Ending Battle. Definitely worth a watch.

Check dem PMs

Actually got around to watching the final episode of it tonight. It really addresses the movies and makes some good points about the evolution of comic books. Absolutely outstanding series.

Lemme know if you want some links for comic downloads too.....got lots of those. heh.
