Clutch Fluid Leak

My ‘02 X with a manual transmission is leaking clutch fluid. I tracked the source to the boot on the clutch release cylinder. Advanced Auto sold me gear oil to top off the master cylinder, but the oil doesn’t stink like gear oil. It says “brake fluid” which I’m inclined to use; but the brake fluid I have (from an older bottle that’s probably 6+ years old) is clear and the fluid in the MC is brown. To top this off, the previous owner supposedly installed a new clutch and I have no idea what he used as fluid. What should be used on a first gen here? Dot 3 or 4 brake fluid?

Also, I’m assuming the release cylinder is actually where the fluid is leaking from. From what I’ve read in a tech manual, the boot simply guards against dust and debris collecting on the push rod. If that’s the case, then it doesn’t actually create a seal. Can anyone confirm this? I want to make sure I replace the right part.

I did a little more research online, was definitely the release cylinder that was leaking. I bought a new one through NAPA, switched it out this morning, and bled the line. She’s back up and running now. Pretty easy repair.
