Auxiliary Fuse Box?

So I have some lights I want to install, and I am tired of tapping fuses for power and such. So I was wondering if there was a way of avoiding this, and powering things a different way. I heard of something called an Auxilary Fuse Block, which I think is pretty much a fuse box for accessories. So does anyone have any experience with these? And if so, do you have any suggestions on a good one to buy?

I've got a 12 spot blue sea fuse black strictly for lights and my cb. As well as a 100 amp breaker so I can cut the power to work on it with out blowing fuses or destroying lights. I love it and highly recommend it

Clean up your wires!!!

An auxiliary fuse panel is definitely the way to go. Blue Sea makes nice units. And the stock jack hold on the truck is a great location if you're lifted and the stock jack is worthless.

Here's my fuse box/relay setup.

There really isn't a long parts list. Some 0ga wire, 100A inline fuse, connectors, fuse box, primary wire, fuses, automotive relays.

Painless makes some nice ones also, but you can get just some cheap ones from the parts store that work just fine. Mine is going on 10 years of wheeling and has yet to miss a beat. They dont have to be water proof, the factory one is not. All that I have done is give the fuses a shot of dielectric grease and everybody stays happy.

I used the Blue Sea too, pretty straight forward.

I couldn't do that spare well for electrical though, as it ends up full of water too often, etc....plus, I'd have to move a lot of stuff to get at it if something blew, etc.

One thing that I liked was I got these fuses the light up when they blow, so, if you look at your fuses, and one is lit up, its the blown one...very handy at night....no testing.

.... Oh.....

I've been in some deep stuff. And it's hasn't leaked on me yet.

Usually doesn't on me either....unless I'm also stopped, then, it tends to come in.

As I have budz who meet in the Pine Barrens every weekend for example, well, it does raise the odds.

:D

After you have flooded a rig or two, its sort of something that tends to stick in your mind from a preventative measures perspective...hence me raising the ECU up higher and potting it, etc....and other stuff.

Aright, I will look into the blue sea box, and I might install it in the car to make sure water doesn't get in it. Or do you think it would be fine to put it under the hood?

Bussmann RTMR is what I recommend, available in multiple configurations with a OEM look. Anyone who has met me know wiring is a pet peeve of mine, maybe we should set up a course at WENT.

My setup with 10 bussed fuses and 3 mini relays.

That looks like a solid unit.

What are the advantages?

Water proof/dust proof and cleanliness are the main 2 for me, has a nice OE look to it. Having the ability to have the relays right there too is pretty nice.

Do you know the exact model Bussmann RTMR you have? And also, how hard is it to wire one of these thing? I have some wiring experience but not a ton.

If you remove the baffle under the passenger rear corner and weld a plate in like I did you dont have to worry about water coming in there anymore. thats what I did. I think I used a piece of 1/16 sheet metal.

Never noticed it before. But my x is 15 years old and the seals arent as air tight as they probably once were. If changing elevation a lot rapidly it would probably be noticable but i always crack a window or pop the sunroof in those situations no matter what vehicle i am in.

I believe its this one http://www.waytekwire.com/item/46347/RTMR-RELAY-RELAY-FUSE-PANEL/ Personally I found it easy to wire up, it uses metripack 280 series female pins and seals. I bought a cheapo $25 metripack crimper and its a piece of cake, crimp the pin on the wire with a seal and pop it in the backside. Since its bussed just run one power wire to the stud, I used 6 gauge, and use little jumper wires to go from the fuse out to the relay in. Just make yourself a diagram/layout of how your going to run everything. There are cheaper places to buy metripack 280 stuff than waytek, its just a good reference.

Blue sea for me, too. Put it right on top of the fuse box, easy access.

some people like em tucked away, I like it where I can get to it easy.

I like the idea of having the relays in the fuse block itself, so I think I too prefer the bussmann. I think I may end up either buying the bussmann or possibly finding a fuse box from another car like the guy in the YouTube video BeepinJeep did, as someone mentioned earlier. However, would it be better to buy a used fuse box or buy the bussmann?

How did you mount these 2 plates that your fuse box and relays sit on?
