Automatic transmission

I have a 2004 with 159,000 miles on it. I can put in drive and it will go into gear but won’t move. Reverse is the same way. On an incline it will roll forward and backward when it is in neutral. So I have ruled out rear end problems or brake issue. It will move in 4 low forward but not backward and seems to be straining when in 4 low. Any ideas on what it could be.

Fluid level is good. It don’t look the best so I am going to change the fluid and filter and see what that does. I’ve only owned this xterra about a week now and it only has 160,000 miles on it.

If it's never been changed with 160k on it, you're probably gonna have to put a transmission in it.

Try some Lucas Slip-fix in the fluid. That's kind of a hail-mary but might get you a few miles.

Do you have a CEL on?

Honestly, this sounds like a transfer case issue. in 2H and 4H, the same input gear selection is applied. In 4L, a different input gear selection is applied. It sounds unhappy in 4L because you're asking the front diff to drag the entire load of the truck AND in low gearing.
