My friend has a 90's Polaris Scrambler 500 4x4 that he will sell to me for $400, I might be able to get him down some but not much. The tranny is shot, Ive been looking online and they seem to run about ~$400 for a tranny. I have driven this 4 wheeler before in the snow and it does great, 4x4 works and all. He warped a front axle last time we had it in the snow and I know he replaced it.

Everytime I wheel my X and get it stuck in the mud I get pissed cause its only 4x2, its like hiking a trail without arms. If I bought this 4 wheeler I would most likely tow it nXm this fall and wheel it the majority of the time and maybe the X a little.

My question is do yall think its worth ~$800?
Also most likely I would have to buy a trailer so I could use the X to tow it but for the time being I could use our work truck.

A whole different option would be 4x4 swap my X but would that run about the same as the 4 wheeler and trailer?

Dude, going full 4x4 conversion with your X is definitely NOT gonna cost you $800....it'll cost you upwards of at least $3-4 grand....

Well the way I was thinking was buying a rolled X or X that had been totaled from rear end damage. Stealing all the 4x4 parts off of it and then re-selling or scrapping it to make money back...and wrecked x's are only 1k or so

It will cost you way more than you think. Just think of it like most other projects, what you think is a small task will usually turn into a much larger task in the end. And is that 400 for the tranny installed? Start looking at what it'd cost you for a similar 4 wheeler at around 1000 bucks.

While I agree with the others that ATV's and PWC's are wasteful (you'll never, ever get back the money you put into them), they are also a hell of a lot of fun, and sometimes worth the expenditure on that basis alone. But, the one you're looking at, I don't think is worth the money and effort you're facing. If you set yourself a budget of, say, $1000, I think a little hunting will find you a better bike in running condition for that price.

Im thinking this is a no go, I have realized I will be in college this fall and probably won't use it that much once the summer is over. Also I talked to the guy today and now he wants $500 for the quad and says a hole tranny will run $450 not installed but I can replaced the bearing and crankcase and it might be a little cheaper than replacing the hole tranny....but like I said besides nXm and some free time during the weekends I don't think I would use it much after the summer is over.

Personally, I think you can find a better deal. Also, maybe it's just me, but I would look for a dirt bike. Tons of fun and you can get a tow hitch attachment for them so you don't even need a trailer.

I just test drove it, it runs fine and my buddy who has four wheelers even says its a decent deal. The kid selling it is 16, he wants the money to buy tickets to a titans game for his dad. He knows NOTHING about 4 wheelers I bet I could get him to go 250. If my parents say yes it's mine. Sorry guys lol if it starts having problems I'll get rid of it...I only spent $300 on it

Yeah, at that price I say go for it. You're not going to have more in it than the fun you'll have. If you have a parts problem and it becomes too expensive just sell that one for parts and cut your losses.

Paint it and that thing would be one bad little guy for ~300

It actually has the paint job like the 86 250 cc's

My parents were going to make me put insurance on it and Im not going to do that when its from 1987.

You would probably need to put some liability insurance on it. You could check out prices on it.

Geico wanted $19 a month for liability, covers up to $25k...or $50k for 2 persons.
I sorta just gave up on it a certain someone (not me) was getting very frustrated with the hole thing. I did test drive it and the thing will fly!

He did say I could call farm bureau in the morning and see what they offer cause they carry my X.
