Are ALL the overland routes in the US out west?

I've been searching for an overland route in my beautiful home state of Louisiana ever since I got my second Xterra. There are no 4x4 parks here that are not either limited to ATV's or only full of mud bogs, and while the photos of trails at places like Moab and Windrock look amazing, I want something more like a point to point journey rather than a trail that starts at a trailhead, take half a day to traverse, and then returns to some central starting area. While that would be fun if it were nearby, I don't really want to drive across three states or more just for that. There's a route around the Great Salt Lake that follows old railways that Alex has posted about, and I know there are a few routes across Death Valley and the Mojave. That's the kind of stuff I'm interested in.

Anyway, back to the search. So far, the nearest I can find is a journey through central Mississippi, and I can not find definitive proof that the entire trail is on public land. I would prefer to avoid private land if possible. It seems like our national population is such that everything near and east of the Mississippi River is paved and inhabited.

So to finish my *****ing and whining, what are some long distance routes you know of that are off the paved path?

Yes you can start from Memphis and hit the dirt.. I'll try and find the expo portal thread where a guy from Chattanooga drove 3k in 2 months mostly off road

Old TX hwy 87 was not good enough for you?

Lol, in reality I agree, There is the two Mississippi routes. Besides that there is Big bend state and national park and certain parts of the trans am trail but I honestly don't know anything close by. You can always drive a dirt levy road but that usually turns into pavement after 30mins. Everything east of the Mississippi is either paved or a real nice dirt road unless you go north as far as I know where there are more old logging trails and not everything is dear hunting leases.

Back east we have just had so many people for so long that is gets pretty tough to find stuff, even the unmantained stuff is very short lived, and has pavement on both ends.

Metz, I could be up for that trip again. I've got the extra spare now, and if I'm gonna ruin more tires, it might as well be the old ones before I get my new ones in the fall. Plus, we no know about the road by the fence line and we can avoid the trash on the beach front. I'd like to go when it cools off a bit, like October, but if you wanna do it sooner, let me know.
