Anyone Know Anything About Miatas

So I know a lot of people think they are girly cars and **** so if you're one of those just stay out.

I want one for the look, sporty feel, good MPG, cheap, easy to work on, DD.

They are fun little cars. After I get out of school I will be parking the X except for things like towing, wheeling, fishing, camping, and other fun stuff. Sort of a weekend getaway car. I will be getting a 90's miata. I know some stuff about them but not nearly enough. Anyone on here ever owned one or wants to own one, or just wants to talk miatas let me know

I have a friend with one now and have had friends with them in the past. The one that has one loves it. The two or three that had them miss them. As a pure drivers car they are very fun to drive. I think they are great as a second car just for fun or to save on gas.

350z Dave! They are sweet. Miatas are as popular and long lasting as they are for a reason. Especially coming from a company who have really blown the market away on anything but head managed to create some good rides over the years.

I'd have to go Z too Dave. I think I may get one when I pay the X off.

Back to Miatas - I've seen them with LS engines and I even saw one with a DOHC 4.6 out of a Mustang recently. Seriously bad a**

The old ford 5.0 late 80s would bolt right on the miata tranny.. I'm not sure on the newer mx5

Okay, so my roommate in college did his homework on Miatas before buying a 3rd gen. And I will pass on what I learned.

Don't waste your time on the 1st gen cars. They are all rotten and have a zillion miles. If you happen to find one that is neither of those, it'll cost a zillion dollars.

The late 2nd gen and 3rd gen up are the deal. More spacious than the earlier cars (which is good if you are flirting with 6' in height). The engines got better and better as the time went and so did the bells and whistles.

If you want bare bones, go middle 2nd gen. It's hard to find those w/ power anything as far as options. My preference would be for a 3rd gen. Power everything, 6-speed gear box (if you buy a Miata w/ an automatic transmission, I will track you down and set it on fire. I promise). Plus all the sat nav options and stuff like that. Interior is damn comfy too.

I was gonna look at 96 or newer the 90-95 all have poor reliability. And I know about the big engine swaps sounds fun but expensive

But from experience you can chirp the tires shifting into third so that's always fun

You can get a 96ish miata with very close to 100k miles either way for under 5k

I think they look much better with a hardtop. Like others here they're just too small for me but they are fun little cars. I love playing on curvy roads and Miatas are very well balanced.

If I had to choose, I take the 350Z everytime. (but I'm a hard core Nissan/Datsun guy)

As for the Miata, I think they are fine cars and can be very reliable. MY mom owns an anniversary edition one, and it has held up great

And speaking of Miatas being reliable. We just ran a 36 hour endurance "Chump Car" race with one. My buddies built a new motor for it 2 nights before the race, and started the race with basically 0 miles on it, lol. 36 strait hard core, flat out racing hours later, it is still running great. You can't say that for a lot of motors out there.

I dont have too much experience with them aside from riding with friends at autocross. My favorite has always been the Mazdaspeed turbo models ('03 & '04). Dump the trashy 17's then run some clean 15"s. Call it quits after that.
