So after getting everything wrapped up from changing the radiator today... I noticed the rubber hose for the air intake, the one on the passenger side is cracked in two places. So orderd both today... just wondering though.. any chance that one being cracked would affect mpg at all? Maybe I’ll be lucky enough to gain a pan extra 1/4 mpg after the new one is on?

It might. Being that it is after the MAF sensor it might be letting "unmetered" air into the intake so the computer isn't getting the right info about what is really going on.

I like your way of thinking! The three times I’ve checked so far I’m averaging between 16-17 mpg, all local driving, no highway. I guess it would also explain why I thought I heard the slight sound of what I thought was sucking air at times......

The O2 sensors see a lean condition because of the extra air and the computer will add fuel to compensate to try and maintain the proper air/fuel ratio.

Once you put the new boots on, do this.
1: Unplug the wiring from the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor in the air filter box outlet.
2: Start the engine. This will set a MIL or "Check Engine Light".
3: Shut off the engine
4: Clear the code in the ECM.
5: Plug the MAF sensor back in
6: Restart the engine

This will force a Long Term Fuel Trend reset and will make it less likely you have any drivability issues while the computer relearns the new air/fuel trends.

You may also want to do a throttle body cleaning and Idle Relearn procedure since your intake has gotten lots of unfiltered air through those leaks and the ECM may have had to do some idle compensation as well.

Well, new rubbers are on. The ones I got look good and fit...but all four new hose clamps are the same size, and one of them wouldn’t fit, just a shy too short so I had to re use one of the old ones.
