Adventures of wrenching on an 04XE

The fight continues. Now we're tracking down a bank 1 lean code. Ended up buying a real bidirectional scan tool (Mucar 682AI) and while checking things, it FINALLY pointed at a misfire on cyl 1 (P0301). new injectors showed up today along with a new set of injector pigtails for... reasons. No indications of vacuum leaks and the MAF is reading as expected but I cleaned it anyways. I figure that instead of a new post/thread every time something new happens I'll just add it to the journey here.

Let's take a stroll down memory lane:

Daughter's BF had an 04 XE when he came to live with her at the house. He asked if he could store it in our carport. No problem, just run the tank empty if it's going to sit for more than 3 months. 3 Months came and went. Life continued. 9 years later we decided to get it operational again for some light overlanding.
Battery dead. - Jumped it with my van and it would not fire up. Sprayed carb cleaner in the intake and got a few seconds of run time then death reclaimed it. Popped the gas cap. This smelled nasty. Checked voltages at the fuel sender and though it was reading right, no pump spinning. pull the cover and sender and what was supposed to be empty was discovered to be about 7 gallons of what was formerly some type of gasoline. At that point, it was closer to reverting back to Dinosaur than a fuel source. Tank was heavily rusted, sender and pump destroyed. new sender and pump installed, tank emptied and cleaned. Lines purged, Fuel filter replaced. Tested at the injector rail and I had good flow, good pressure. filled the injector rail with gumout carb cleaner and let it set for a week. pulled the fuel pump fuse and used compressed air in the rail while daughter cranked it over. It fired up but sounded horrendous. No problem, we're purging the rail and the injectors. Reassembled everything, Started it and filled the tank. Tank level reading is way off but it ran pretty well. Replaced the battery, plugs, wires, cap and rotor.

On to the next issue, headliner. That took about a week since I did the door inserts and the visors by hand (never do visors by hand). Daughter picked the material and color scheme and it looks good. Looked at the headlights and they suffered from the melted pizza cheese look. Sanded and polished those and repainted both bezels so they were silver (one was black one was silver).

Next trip was to work and had the fleet guys go over it with a fine toothed comb. Since this was a vehicle my daughter would drive, It needed to be safe and functional. Found the date code of the tires were from 2009. This was 2024. new shoes ordered. Upper and lower ball joint rubber covers were dry rotted. They were all tight and had no play whatsoever. Still, Daughter would be driving this. I replaced the ball joints. I have never been so happy to have a 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar. Bushings on the UCA and LCAs are good. Stab links for the front sway bar were... self deleted. Replaced the links.

Ran it down for inspection and smogging... Failed. Inspection passed with flying colors, Smog failed for a P0300. Got my cheap code reader out when I got home and not only did it have the P0300 but also a P0745. Dropped the pan for the trans and found the connector was corroded outside the trans. great. reassembled and cleaned the connector, refilled with trans fluid. code cleared. Noticed wetness around the PS pump.. Great, what's next here? Pulled the pump, replaced the seals and rebuilt it. Looks new and performs great. No leaks whatsoever.

Son now needs a reliable vehicle for work (since he totaled my wife's car but that's another story). He decides he'll trade the Xterra in for a 2018 Ecosport. The Stealership offers him a grand. I told him I'd pay him a grand for it much to the chagrin of the guy who took it for a test drive. Yes, I actually used the word chagrin. My life is complete. Checked with my CFO and she approved the purchase and we made his down payment with the card. New deal is I own a 2004 Xterra XE until my daughter pays me a grand for it and I sign the title over to her. Still needs work. after getting it repaired so it can be registered, New headunit with dual dashcam and a week of me driving it all over to prove out the machine. Once passed, Daughter starts using it for work.

Well, Changed out the injectors on bank 1 along with the damaged pigtails and now it runs worse than it did before the injector change. What I did notice is that the flat rubber washers on all 3 of the old injectors were split and still in the injector rail. to add insult to injury, I lost one of the retaining screws from cyl 1's injector cap and nobody close has one. I might just get the o-ring and washer set and replace those on the original injectors and try again.

Bummer - don't give up yet. It's worth it to get these old Xterras running again!

Retainer Screws - This should be something available from a hardware store... they're probably M5 or M6 screws, right?

Injectors - what injectors did you use in bank 1? Lots of people have reported issues with aftermarket injectors in the Nissan and Toyota world... I wonder if you'd have better luck with some used injectors instead. There is a guy who parts out 1st gen Nissan Xterras. I know recently he had a full set of tested and cleaned injectors for sale... you could email him and see about getting some good OEM injectors.

thegageinator@gmail.com is his email.

Good luck!

I only thought of the hardware store Sunday during my feverdream ( I've got a full blown case of the flu). When I pulled the old injectors (on top of mangling them) I noticed the flat washers on the actual nozzle side were split. The new injectors do in fact make it run like garbage and I've only worked on bank 1.
Thank you for the injector source. My issue is that I don't know whether they're blue dotted or black as I looked at the dots under all different light sources and can't tell which color it is.

I don't know about colored dots... But I think the injector color is all that matters (pink for naturally aspirated, black for supercharged models). I could be wrong about the dots, but have never heard of a difference before.

Tried the new injectors and they were absolute crap. What I did establish is the flat washers on the bottom of the injectors were torn. I replaced those on the bank 1 side and installed the old injectors. Now things are reading much more equal between banks. Unfortunately I cleared all codes so the IM readiness isn't set so I need drive cycles and additional testing. Still might need to smoke test it or replace O2 sensors.
