The fight continues. Now we're tracking down a bank 1 lean code. Ended up buying a real bidirectional scan tool (Mucar 682AI) and while checking things, it FINALLY pointed at a misfire on cyl 1 (P0301). new injectors showed up today along with a new set of injector pigtails for... reasons. No indications of vacuum leaks and the MAF is reading as expected but I cleaned it anyways. I figure that instead of a new post/thread every time something new happens I'll just add it to the journey here.
Let's take a stroll down memory lane:
Daughter's BF had an 04 XE when he came to live with her at the house. He asked if he could store it in our carport. No problem, just run the tank empty if it's going to sit for more than 3 months. 3 Months came and went. Life continued. 9 years later we decided to get it operational again for some light overlanding.
Battery dead. - Jumped it with my van and it would not fire up. Sprayed carb cleaner in the intake and got a few seconds of run time then death reclaimed it. Popped the gas cap. This smelled nasty. Checked voltages at the fuel sender and though it was reading right, no pump spinning. pull the cover and sender and what was supposed to be empty was discovered to be about 7 gallons of what was formerly some type of gasoline. At that point, it was closer to reverting back to Dinosaur than a fuel source. Tank was heavily rusted, sender and pump destroyed. new sender and pump installed, tank emptied and cleaned. Lines purged, Fuel filter replaced. Tested at the injector rail and I had good flow, good pressure. filled the injector rail with gumout carb cleaner and let it set for a week. pulled the fuel pump fuse and used compressed air in the rail while daughter cranked it over. It fired up but sounded horrendous. No problem, we're purging the rail and the injectors. Reassembled everything, Started it and filled the tank. Tank level reading is way off but it ran pretty well. Replaced the battery, plugs, wires, cap and rotor.
On to the next issue, headliner. That took about a week since I did the door inserts and the visors by hand (never do visors by hand). Daughter picked the material and color scheme and it looks good. Looked at the headlights and they suffered from the melted pizza cheese look. Sanded and polished those and repainted both bezels so they were silver (one was black one was silver).
Next trip was to work and had the fleet guys go over it with a fine toothed comb. Since this was a vehicle my daughter would drive, It needed to be safe and functional. Found the date code of the tires were from 2009. This was 2024. new shoes ordered. Upper and lower ball joint rubber covers were dry rotted. They were all tight and had no play whatsoever. Still, Daughter would be driving this. I replaced the ball joints. I have never been so happy to have a 24" 1/2" drive breaker bar. Bushings on the UCA and LCAs are good. Stab links for the front sway bar were... self deleted. Replaced the links.
Ran it down for inspection and smogging... Failed. Inspection passed with flying colors, Smog failed for a P0300. Got my cheap code reader out when I got home and not only did it have the P0300 but also a P0745. Dropped the pan for the trans and found the connector was corroded outside the trans. great. reassembled and cleaned the connector, refilled with trans fluid. code cleared. Noticed wetness around the PS pump.. Great, what's next here? Pulled the pump, replaced the seals and rebuilt it. Looks new and performs great. No leaks whatsoever.
Son now needs a reliable vehicle for work (since he totaled my wife's car but that's another story). He decides he'll trade the Xterra in for a 2018 Ecosport. The Stealership offers him a grand. I told him I'd pay him a grand for it much to the chagrin of the guy who took it for a test drive. Yes, I actually used the word chagrin. My life is complete. Checked with my CFO and she approved the purchase and we made his down payment with the card. New deal is I own a 2004 Xterra XE until my daughter pays me a grand for it and I sign the title over to her. Still needs work. after getting it repaired so it can be registered, New headunit with dual dashcam and a week of me driving it all over to prove out the machine. Once passed, Daughter starts using it for work.
