A terrible idea!

As I was lying in bed trying to fall asleep last night, it occured to me that the Xterra is the only F-Alpha truck that doesn't have any chrome (badges don't count). Now, I'm not a fan of chrome, at all, but clearly a lot of people are, or there wouldn't be so many chrome accessories for Jeeps, Ford/GM/Dodge trucks, Titans, Tundras, etc. So, I'm putting this idea in someone's head:

Chrome Shrock/Hefty/RLC/ARB front bumper, chrome sliders, chrome rear bumper(bonus points if it's a tire carrier!). :D

Do it and win the internets. DO IT!

LOL. I am going to stay away from chrome though, it screams "I DON'T OFFROAD, AT ALL."

Ah, just noticed this is 2nd gen. Still, my comment stands! Lol

Frontier/Xterra bumpers might be interchangeable on the first gens, but not the 2nd gens. Besides, I want to see chrome armor! And SHHHHHHHH, be quiet. I want someone to do this and you're gonna scare 'em off!

If you think about it, because chrome is electroplated on instead of just sprayed, it's a a good way to prevent rust. Just takes a little more elbow grease to stay shiny all the time. Mall Crawler Award FTW!

I've seen Chrome shrock sliders on a 1st gen. The guy had bought them used very cheap and wheeled with them. It was a long time ago and I only wheeled with him the one time at the old Paragon. It was a black truck, I'll see if I can find a picture.

And then there was this. All blacked out with the 20" emblem on the door. Again... only the rims.

Chrome actually pretty strong and durable, hence why some barrels are chrome-lined.

I think it may be aluminum but still...

That actually looks pretty good on that Frontier. Would look a lot better if they hadn't put those billet inserts in the grill. I hate that s***.

I'd rock the chrome grill insert that we all seem to blackout anyway that's probably about it though. If chrome didn't get f'd up so easily I think more people would be down for it but you have to clean it and polish. Ugh what a pain

OK, I’ve done some research and found out the chrome sliders were on a Sliver (not black) ‘02 Supercharged owned Dave Keller (sanmian) who, as far as I can tell, left the game late in ’07. I haven’t heard of him since. A decent guy; knew a ton of stuff about everything and never hesitated to share…kind of like TJ…

Many of the boards have be updated since ’07 so I haven’t found any pictures of the truck with them on (he switched them out for black Calmini sliders). I’ll need to look through my old files to see if I have a shot of them.

With respect I know that this is an old thread and I am just a noob, but there are 2 types of chrome.
Shiny decorative rims are nickel plated and the placed in a bath for chrome. The nickel brightens it up but as far as durability it is useless for the off-road community. Now there is hard chrome plating that is rust resistant and is used in the industrial applications of say hydraulic shafts, cranks, molds. Hard chrome maybe just maybe for an accent piece but that's it. Just my 2 cents guys as a Hard chrome electroplater, stick with colour...GM

I found a coupla pics I had when wheeling with Dave (And his famous Chrome Sliders):

I took these at Paragon, maybe Winter of 2006.

He bought them because he was told they were Shrocks that the seller had chromed.

It turns out they were MODELED after Shrocks, and, then, chromed.

The chroming caused hydrogen embrittlement, a common problem, and, they eventually broke on hard impact.

The embrittlement is one reason why chrome off road stuff is foo foo.

Well I cannot see your picks but I do believe that the imbrittlement can be avoided by placing the parts in an oven for a few hours, usually 4-6 hrs right after it is plated. This is a common practice with most plating from cadmium to chrome...GM

Hmmm, I can see them?

Anyway - Yeah, there are ways to help the embrittlement, but, in this case, bad chrome on bad welds was not a recipe for success.

:D
