4x2 to 4x4 conversion?

I own a 2000 5-speed manual RWD.
The only thing I wish I could change is to have 4WD capabilities.
My question is, can I keep my existing transmission, if I purchase an automatic 4x4 with a blown head gasket???
The X I'm looking at is only $500, so if it were possible, I'd like to know some of the issues I'll encounter along the way

I am doing the RWD to 4WD conversion and looking at the same issue. I have no idea what condition the donor transmission is in or how much it costs at junk yard (or even mileage.

Let's team up and see if we can get our Xterras out the other side alive.

Fortunately, I can have it down while I do this.

Here is a pretty good thread if you haven't seen it yet.

Very sorry I haven't seen this until now.
I'm planning to SAS,4x4 convert, & Full ton coilover convert, with 4 link in the rear, 3 link in the front.
Dana 80 axles.
Ridiculous build.
Taking longer than expected for sure.
