2nd Gen Surging/stalling

Was out riding around today and in low range on a steep uphill section and the X started surging and bucking at steady throttle. Kinda like the throttle body was opening and closing but if I applied more throttle it was like it was stalling out.

It didn't last very long, a couple yards, didn't throw a CEL or have any other issues the rest of the day. It's not hard to start or running any different than before.

Anyone experienced anything like this before?

Possibly. I was in Moab on a sandy back trail, in low range, and in a bit of a pickle but not bad, and after plowing through it seemed like something was a bit off. After stopping and shutting off the engine, wait a couple of minutes, then restart all was fine. I figured I might have gone into limp mode or something for a bit.

Could it be that ABS system was kicking in and out as the wheels were trying for traction?

Yep, I skipped across some rocks trudging uphill and same thing.. lasted a min or so and was worried. We all stopped at the top and after sitting for a few it started right up and has run fine since. After a little reading I assume it went into limp mode till I restarted it..

That sounds like what happened to me. I didn't have to restart it though, it eventually went back to normal.

I guess it could have been the abs but the slip light never even flickered.

I never could get it to repeat it yesterday.

Makes ya wonder though.... "What the heck just happened and what is going on? Will it happen again? Sure hope it isn't something serious."
It took a few hours for me to regain confidence in Tonka that she wouldn't let us down.

Now that you mention it, my cel didn't pop but the slip light did come on. Off when I restarted it. Would that point to limp mode or abs? Do they work together?

Has everybody recently cleaned out the air throttle body and the butterfly valve?

I experienced somewhat similar symptoms on a couple of occasions with the WD21 1993 Nissan Pathfinder and managed to resolve it by using throttle body air intake cleaner, a toothbrush and several soft cotton cloths.
