Our new (to us) VW Jetta TDI, the YETTI. The price was right. My wife’s parents didn’t want it, so now we have it. Trouble is, it was absolutely disgusting inside. My wife’s uncle had been living in the car for nearly a year while his paperwork for work abroad was finalized. And he vaped in This thing. Boy, did he vape. Lots of vape. Pro tip: if you must suck on a douche flute, don’t do it in your car. All that nasty vape schmoo that gets exhaled after a tour through your lungs, gets into everything; the carpets, ventilation system, headliner, seats, steering wheel, everything. And finding a THC cartridge didn’t help. LOL! But that’s neither here nor there. It just made for a rigorous, intense deep clean of this car inside and out.

And after my wife drove the car a couple days after I was done, she was amazed at the transformation – not just because the car looks and feels clean, but it smells amazing now. And like I said, the price was right.

Gratuitous parking lot pic at Autozone. Picked up a new battery, a couple of filters, and some oil.

It starts. Time to detail the (literal) crap out of this thing. There wasn’t so much in the way of trash as there was a desperate need to deep clean the carpets and every other hard and textile surface of the car.

Seats out. This is the way.

Luckily, the rear seats folded up and out of the way, so they didn’t need to come out for cleaning.

Thank goodness they are leather. They cleaned up nicely. They were completely dull and faded looking before cleaning.

I cleaned these carpets until I no longer saw this in my dirty water container.

Cleaned up engine bay.

And since the oil was low, and no doubt this car spent its life being lubricated with whatever is in the barrel at Jiffy Lube, I treated this Eurotrash car to some proper oil, just for it.

Last thing was to let it marinade with an ozone generator for about 12 hours. Ozone is what makes the air smell fresh after a rainstorm. It has a deodorizing effect. But to be effective, you need to rid the vehicle of what was causing the smells in the first place, which I spent hours doing the day before.

The rest was just the usual things. Clean and treat the dash, windows, the floor mats, etc. But with only 72K miles, it beats our Saturn, which has 194K miles. But now my wife can drive this vehicle around a few years while I slowly do some work to keep our old college car running. Who knows? My son is only 3 years from driving age, so we might let him drive it around after I make sure it is safe for him.

Finally had a good day clean up her up for some pictures. Ran the ozone generator in it all night again and got the odors completely eliminated. You’d never know it was owned by a complete slob before.

Thank you. Yes, ozone is a thing for sure. Just don’t overdo it. It’ll eat the rubber in your car if you do it too much.

Oh, I got out of that business a long time ago. I’ve been a generator technician and heavy engine mechanic for the last 15 years. But since I spend a lot of time working in the dirt, I enjoy making my junk pristine. Thanks for the compliment.

Few black and white pics. Makes it look faster.

I couldn’t seem to find a fuel filter at the usual scumbags, and I didn’t want to pay high prices at the VW stealership, so I bought an OEM one on Amazon. Took seemingly forever to get here. But we aren’t in a huge rush.

This isn’t the best fuel filter housing I’ve run across, but it certainly isn’t the worst. Those Torx screws make the process just a bit tedious.

New next to old. I’ve seen a lot worse in my days in the field, but I needed to establish a baseline for maintenance moving forward, so ready or not, here it comes.

Fresh seal, lubed, filter ready to drop in.

Whenever I put screws, bolts, or nuts back on, I have a habit of throwing a stripe down so I can quickly tell if it backs out. Also comes in handy so you know when your fastener has been properly torqued.

Start up, let it idle for 10 minutes, check for leaks, take the car for a rip around the block, and call it a day.

That awkward moment when the car tries to establish dominance by marking its territory over 20 feet away.

Now, I laughed too hard at the idea that, when my wife tried to use the rear wiper nozzle, it sent this fine stream back with enough force to go over the car behind her and hit the car behind it.

But this just won’t do – not with winter coming.

Getting the nozzle out is pretty easy. Just screw in a small screw into what was left of the old nozzle, give it a tug, and jam this new one in, making sure it’s pointed up. The metal part of the nozzle is angled to make it hit the window right in the middle.

Install the way overpriced cover, and you’re off to the races.

And there we have it. Wife will be pleased.

First road trip in this pig. Say, 670ish miles each way. Stayed three nights in Los Angeles, still have all my windows intact, and four tires. Jettas are built like tanks, and this one is no different. Side note: it rides like a tank too. Sounds like a Kubota tractor, makes a lot of wind noise, but is reasonably comfortable for 10-12 hours in the saddle. Gets 450-520 miles to a tank thanks to the TDI engine. Plenty of torque and power for pulling long steep hills at 85 mph, and passing slowpokes & trucks with ease.

The controls are so very German; fiddly, unintuitive, and no-nonsense. For instance, the cruise control is almost hidden behind the steering wheel, and to cancel it once it is set, you have to flick this tiny spring-loaded wheel, but not too far or you’ll turn the cruise off completely… did I mention it is hidden behind the wheel? the wipers get even better. Flick the lever up for intermittent wipers and there’s a fiddly wheel on it with three settings to choose from. Flick up again for on/low and up one more time for on/high. Now momentarily push the whole lever down for a courtesy wipe. For washers, you gotta pull it back. Now if you push it forward it turns on the rear wiper. If you push and hold it forward some more, you get washer fluid with the rear wiper. Now it may not seem so bad reading it, but I only really learned how all this crap worked while driving through a blizzard while in traffic on I-15, LOL! If there was something to truly hate on this car, I’d say all of the instrumentation and controls. My Nissan Xterra absolutely slays the Jetta when it comes to use of things like wipers and cruise.

The lights are quite dim. I need to take care of that. And I want to get some fog lights for it. Visibility in this so-called snow squall was dreadful with just low beams.

The car handles reasonably good in the snow. The tires on this are so-so in snow and useless on ice. They handle just fine in a downpour. Traction control is fast reacting. Taking it easy in inclement weather never left me feeling like I was going to lose control. And with the most important people I know in the vehicle with me, that was the most important thing.

But other than a couple of small gripes about how idiotic the controls are, lack of leg room, and a few other details, it was a pleasure to drive. I really hadn’t had the opportunity to get a lot of seat time in this car except a few trips to the store and driving around UT County. A good road trip is a way to really flesh out a vehicle.

What I need to do now is give it a once-over inside because it’s filthy now.

I bought a toboggan for the Jetta! No curb is safe.

Now all it needs is a lift, a set of 31’s, and we can do some proper mall crawling.
