I'll tell you my experiences from having an 02 XE and going to an 07 Off Road.

It depends on what you want to do. It's that simple.

If you are looking for a daily to take the kids to school a 12 is a good fit. It's bigger. More powerful. Can actually get out of it's own way. And can really wheel. The 2nd gen is (just a bit) too big for it's driveline.

The 1st gen has an overbuilt driveline for and underpowered engine. But. If you want to wheel and don't want to ufck with the general operation of the truck? Well. That's a different conversation.

I moved from VA to Colorado. And if I knew then what I know now I would have kept my 1st gen, done a SAS and would still be wheeling the shiat out of that truck.

All that being said, the 2nd gen (2010+) has some good advantages.

I also have a 2011 Pathy which has been an outstanding family vehicle without any of the pitfalls of the 2005-2009 F-Alpha platform.

What he said. I love the Gen1. The nostalgic look, the rock solid durability. I hate that its underpowered and gets terrible mileage.

But man, they are tough as nails. What do you want to do, ultimately?

I'll give you my perspective, as I have both an 03 X, and a 2013 Frontier Pro-4x.

I will 100% agree with @Prime. The second gens make a better daily rig. They are bigger, have a bit more room, and WAY more power. They do not, however, get much better gas mileage.

For wheeling, while my truck has a rear locker, I'd take the the first Gen over the second. You would be very hard pressed to break anything under a first Gen. I've had mine for two years now, and beat the snot out of it in the Oregon desert, and the only thing I've had to fix is wheel bearings and the centerlink.

I have no lift, no skid plates, no aftermarket front bumper.

I will NEVER get rid of it. I might SAS it at some point though.
