2004 X died during drive like it ran out of gas.

Greetings.
So I was driving 150 miles to Boise airport in the middle of nowhere with 3/4 tank of gas when suddenly it felt like I was running out of gas and starting losing power.
Pulled over turned engine off, waited a minute then restarted. Was only able to go about 20 fee before having to pull over again due to lack of power.
After that just cranks like it is out of gas.
Had him towed to a storage garage and will have to deal with upon unknown return when work in FL is done.
Have already called several mechanics to get some price info on diagnostics.
Anybody ever have this issue?
Thanks
Retro

Did you get a check engine light? Could be a fuel filter, could be the distributor. They are known failure points as well.

No check engine light came on. I thought about the fuel filter but there were no issues before the stall out. Maybe fuel pump?

Sorry for delays in response. Working many hours doing hurricane inspections for damaged homes in FL.
No bucking or misfiring just the feel like running out of gas.
At the time of the issue I did not check for sound from fuel pump due to being on a busy road. The X was towed directly to a storage unit in Boise and I jumped into a Uber for airport right after.
Testing will be done once back. After seeing the temps up there I am happy to be in FL as long as possible, plus making money!

Had the same thing happen on our 02. Freeway speed, then it shiat the bed. Sat for a few minutes, started, shiat the bed again. Was the fuel sending unit. Replaced it, all good.

Update. Finally got done working in florida for FEMA hurricane contract. Got back to Boise Feb 10th and was able to get free towing to a shop. As suspected it was the fuel pump. Costly fix. Between the pump and letting the shop do a synthetic oil change the cost out the door was $817. That was with a $100 coupon. Another $470 for gas back to Houston along with the $600+ costs for storing the X while working in florida.
The decision now is do I really want the crap gas mileage and the coming repair costs for a almost 20 year old vehicle that goes months without being driven due to my line of work.

Yes? I love the way yours looks, and that manual transmission is killer. What would you replace it with? I mean, if you don't want a car at all, I get that. If you were closer to DFW, you could park it in the pasture with my other cars for free hahaha

Honestly, sometimes owning or liking a car doesn't make logical sense. We all be driving Camrys if that was the case. Gen 1 and Gen 1.5 are disappearing. I put a lot into my 2003 recently because the car treated me well for 10.5 years and had a lot of memories. I appreciate it more now since owning 2013 now. Styling, interior features, and how basic it is.

You're not fooling anybody Kirk.... The fee would be that you get to drive it occasionally...

That of course is the million dollar question Kirk. As a replacement I'm not sure what I would get at this moment. Most likely it would have to be some type of smaller SUV even if I had to go for the dreaded Subaru size or Toyota RAV4. I'm just not taking advantage of driving off road the way I thought I would with the X original goal of going off-road camping throughout the summer didn't happen because I had so much crap in the back of it due to overpacking when I left Houston. I can't say I didn't camp at all I did three nights in a row on the way to Yellowstone National Park due to them being very strict of not showing up until my orientation day. Now that I'm back in Houston I'm just going to think about it a little bit and decide what the summer plan is. Thanks for the storage offer.
