2001 SE Steering Box Adjustment

So I had an alignment last week because I replaced my tie rods and front shocks. I noticed afterward that there was about 1 inch of wheel slack. Just enough to be annoying while driving on the highway. After looking online I found how to adjust the steering box. After a full turn to the right with the Allen key, the slack increased to about 2 inches of travel. I stopped and turned the Allen key to the left a total of a full turn. This didn't change the slack at all so I went back to the center to hopefully go back to 1 inch of travel but the slack remained at about 2 inches again. All of the adjustments were done in 1/4 increments. Help would be appreciated.
