2000 xterra rear main seal leak

Hey all. Im new to this forum and xterras. I bought my 2000 xterra last weekend. Before buying it, my friend looked it over and noticed it was leaking from the rear main seal. I told the dealer about it and they were quick to send it to a shop to get fixed before I bought it. It was leaking pretty bad. Decent sized puddle on the ground. While the truck was in the shop, I called them asking what all was being fixed. They told me it wasn't the rear main seal and was the valve cover gasket and that it was a big job and would take a few days. A few days later, the truck was done and I took it for another test drive before buying. I ran it for a good while and let it sit for a bit while running. No puddles or leaks. Well, now I bought the truck and a week later I notice a leak again. I took it to the local Nissan dealer and they confirmed it is a rear main seal leak. I don't know if the dealer will honor it to fix it AGAIN since I now signed on the dotted line.....

...but...my question is....has anyone used that liquid rear main seal repair stuff? I have heard a bunch of people tell me to stay away from it. Others say they have used it and it works.

Any suggestions?

I stay away from any leak stop stuff. It can't tell where it is in the engine to just attack the rear main seal. It basically just sludges up the oil which could clog numerous small oil galleys in the block or head.

I thnk you may have grounds to go to whomever you bought the truck from and ask them to replace the rear main seal. For this reason and this reason only; you asked them to replace the rear main seal and they replaced the valve cover gaskets. Maybe they needed to be replaced as well, but that's not what you asked for.

But it is a 2nd or 3rd or 4th hand 14-year old used vehicle and they might just ignore you, unfortunately.

Rear main seal is a bigger job than the valve cover gaskets as the transmission has to be taken down to get to it.

Good luck.

Yeah the rear main is a major pain to to which is why they miss lead you. I would just take it back to the dealer.. You have a history of a issue so either they fix it right or they get it back
