I just cut my cherry bomb glass pack off. I've heard they can explode or cause problems. It was starting to have a buzz noise to it like it was leaking exhaust. So I'm running with no muffler for the 3rd time lol. I've got a flowmaster that's going on soon and I'm gunna have to get new pipe. The stock ones been cut too many times lol.
I have a video of both the glasspack from yesterday before I removed it and a video of my truck with just cats, no muffler. If anyone wants to hear then let me know.

Okay so I took this yesterday before I cut my cherry bomb glass pack off. This thing had probably 5k-8k miles on it. You can hear it sounds kinda fuzzy, I've heard they can exploded/crack and really mess up. So my flow master is going on sometime in the next few days.
I really liked the sound of it but it made me too nervous.

I thought mine sounded kinda throaty for the V6. Just a dual in & out flowmaster 2.25" pipe from manifolds back.
Its since changed due to the constant drone on the interstate... 3K makes the whole inside hum.

Is your flowmaster the super 44? I have the same issue at 3k rpm

50 Series... Its a blessed large muffler. I think its just the harmonics of these engines. My hardbody I had did the same thing. (It had some cheap off the wall muffler)

But thats not good news because I planed to put a flow on here real soon. What are yall gonna do?

You still got your catalytic converters right? You won't notice as much cab noise. Also bringing the pipes straight out the rear seemed to help mine.

I've had like 8 different variations of exhaust on my xterra. I've settled with something quieter now. (guess I'm just getting old)

I'm going the same way, gonna go to a bit more growly exhaust, but, unless I accomplish dynamatting the entire vehicle, no louder...

Unstamped mangnaflow muffler and went back and rebuilt the y-pipe. No more duals for me. Unless I swap engines out.

When its this late, and I'm on the interwebs, I'm always looking for future mods. Going back to the exhaust, I want to do the DT longtubes, and do it before July (VA State inspection is due). However....w/ these being long tube headers, is there a orderable/bolt on Y-Pippe option in 2.5" pipe? Maybe something complete with the flex joint that is right under the transmission? Otherwise am I looking at taking to a custom exhaust shop to get the intermediate piping done?

The final thing to note is that when I put in the catback, I want to push it back up toward the body to pick it up from the body lift. Right now, it seems kind of stupid to have the muffler/tailpipe as low as they are.

I went completely custom after the DT headers, with hi-flow cats and a flex pipe in the same area. The exhaust is pretty much ran the same way.. and I had my exhaust guy cut it off flush with the rear bumper end-cap

Mine looks like this

NewPicture4-2.jpg

The OEM sizes are approximate.. but that's in line with what I've read from a couple forums..

Noted. There is a shop down the street from me that does killer custom exhaust work (at killer prices of course). Once I buy the headers and catback I might just drop the truck there and have them do the whole kitten kaboodle.

Just got back from the muffler shop today, had a local guy put on a 40 series flowmaster, and kept the original ypipe and from muffler out, put duals on.

Has a nice deep rumble, and even, and clean noise. And you can hear it from both sides which i love.

I'm sorry. And this may be my inner Ford guy coming out.....but I don't really think any noise the tiny little 3.3 can make will be a rumble. A burble maybe. A "more aggressive note," sure. But not a rumble. It takes true dual exhaust (w/ some kind of crossover) and at least two more cylinders to get a rumble. Granted the displacement of the 3.3 is only slightly behind say a 5.0 or a 351 in terms of L/cylinder but I just don't think it moves enough air to "rumble."

/Ford v8s sound better
//Still can't wait tondo the exhaust on the X

When I mean rumble, I dont mean a V8 low rumble.

From stock exhaust being almost nonexistent in terms of sound, the new exhaust definitely has a rumble.

I didn't mean to compare to a real true rumble, but its as good as you can get with the 3.3.

Well I finally got around to changing out my muffler. Once the tail pipe fell off, I discovered how far gone the muffler was...the weld around the back end of the case was totally rotted out, as was the back wall of the case and the entire outlet pipe. Time for a change :)

Went with a Flowmaster Super 44, 2.5" in/out. Underneath the driver's side rear floor, the pipe steps up to 2.5" into the muffler, and I've got a section of 2.5" pipe straight out the back. Sounds good, I'm happy with it, and it (should) last for a good long while.

So, my headers are on the way. But I need to replace the ENTIRE system. I'm looking at the mid pipes that go from the header collector to the Y pipe. I can get aftermarket reproduction of the factory setup w/ the cats for about $100/ side. Which is pretty damn cheap. Would it be better to go that route for space constraints or get regular cats and have the whole thing custom made. Keep in mind I already need a custom Y pipe because mine is gone and I can't seem to find one anywhere. After that I'm picking up a 2.5" center in/out Borla and one of their intecooled tips. But all of the rest of the piping will have to be custom.

You should be able to get some high flow cats pretty cheap, if you do that, get it all custom done, so you have a nice improvement ;)

There's lots of hi-flow options out there but my concern is where to put them. There isn't a whole lot of room where the mid pipes come down and go past the transmission/T-bar cross member. After that its direct into the Y pipe.

Rock Auto has y-pipes, I know 'cause I just bought one. About $100 IIRC.

What about the high flow cats from AC? Haven't really looked into any of this myself, just throwing some ideas out there.

I've been looking at some of the universal hi-flow options and at $65 each that's a deal. The question becomes how much I'd be on the hook for getting the piping done.

Magnaflow makes direct fit hi-flows but they are in the $300-350 range PER SIDE. That's just ridiculous.

Thanks for the tip on the Y pipe...I'll check it out.

If you get the walker b pipes for the '00 model year you get catless downpipes. It might be easier to stick a big high flow right in front of the muffler than in the y pipe or doing custom downpipes.

Not sure how safe that is...remember, cats get dangerously hot. It's best to keep them in your stock locations...there's heat shielding there, and, it's up high enough that it won't catch grasses underneath it on fire easily...
