02 Nissan Xterra no crank

So as seen in my other 2 threads thus far here, I was given an 02 xterra 3.3 4x4, orignally thought it wouldn't crank wouldn't start due to a bad starter, well, I put a starter in it, and it won't crank, but if you put the key in run and jump across it will start right up.

I also dug these codes out of it as it had a cel on

P0600-
A/T Control Serial Communication Link Malfunction

and

p1605-
a/t communication error

I'm guessing this means it isn't getting a signal from the transmission, I checked the wiring, and it appears fine at just a glance, what are the chances my tcm is bad?

Replied to your other thread dont think these codes are related to the no crank issue. However you can check these out with a multimeter once you get the X running. Probably a bad harness or something simple.

Looks like from my quick glance the TCM has no control over the starting circuit.

Have you tried starting it in Neutral? It could be something as simple as a bad safety switch? It’s worth a shot and not going to cost you much to try

I only know of the one under the hood thats apparently the relay involved with the starter even if nissan doesn't call it that. it does not click

Did you check the relays and fuses that I posted in your other thread? There a multiple fuses due to the interlocks ie PNP/clutch switches and relays. If you need a I can post the diagram. Do you have a multimeter for testing or a test light? Just looking for 12V down the circuit.

Hopefully it's just a fuse but it could also be the interlock relay. If it is a harness issue you are not in for a good time.

I'm having the same problem. I have a 2001 Xterra I believe anyway the thing that throws off is that it has the 2002 fuse box under the hood. I got it from an auction I haven't had it running since I got it any help would be great.

  • – Check the car’s battery voltage. Insufficient battery power can cause sensors to stop reading, triggering a P0600 code.
  • – Visually inspect all sensors and wires. Look for gaps in the insulation, corroded contacts, or severed wires.
  • – Use a multimeter to check all parts of the wiring harness for continuity including all ground cables.

Hopefully just one of those large relays on the pass fender, otherwise download the free nissan manual and look at the ignition circuit I'd start with fuses and relays.

I have check fuses and relays also cleaned battery post and put a fully charged battery on. I have figured up that I'm not getting a single to the starter. Going to start following wires tomorrow the best I can anyway. Do you have a link for the manual by chance?

Ok so know I have power at the clutch relay with key in the on position but after that I get lost I don't know where to go or what to check next

If you want you can start your own thread however this circuit is simple. Here is a diagram. What pin on the relay do you have 12v on? You should have power on the trigger side of the relay in the start/on position. You should also have power on the switch side during start.

Ground is only achieved if the smart entrance control conditions are met (power locks only) and if the clutch switch is working. Once ground is signaled the relay closes and you get power to the solenoid on the starter.

I have power on terminal 1 of clutch relay with key in on position. I finally found the security relay and I have power on the number 2 terminal and very low power on the number 4 terminal. I don't know the voltage because my multimeter died when testing I only had a test light. If I understand the diagram correctly I think power should be on the number two terminal of the clutch relay. I probably have that wrong and I don't believe I want power on the number two terminal of the security relay?

Not being a jerk but I am going to guess you don't know how relays work so I am going to give a brief overview.

Taking the interlock relay the way the circuit is built you should have power on both pin 2 and 1 with the ignition on or during a start condition. However that voltage is floating till it is brought to ground to complete the circuit and switch the power between 5 and 3. If you want to do a simple test you can take a power reading on 3 of the interlock relay while you try and start the truck. That verifies that power is being switched and that the ground trigger for 2 and 1 is working proving out the rest of the relays for door locks and clutch switch.

Let me know if you need more detail. Here is a good video on relays and how they work.

I wish I knew what I was doing but I don't that is why I came here. I'm trying to look at all this stuff on my phone so it's kinda hard. How do I test for power with the relay in place I know how they work just don't know how to test the circuit with them in. Where are the inter lock relays? Sorry for asking

You will need some back probes to help test with a multimeter. I think the owners manual will have the layout of the relay box if not you can get the FSM from nicoclub with all the layout.

I am not near my truck so I can't get pictures till early May.
