Stud oil cooler: replace or clean up the thread? PROBLEM SOLVED

PROBLEM SOLVED I drove to a local parts store (Lordco Auto Parts) this morning hoping to buy a die to clean up the oil cooler stud thread for the oil filter. Did not have one large enough. Was recommended to see a machine shop in town on Monday. Messaged a friend who lives in this village...

Stud oil cooler: replace or clean up the thread? PROBLEM SOLVED

Looks like I damaged the thread of the stud oil cooler which holds the oil cooler in place and to which the oil filter is screwed on. Should I replace at an estimated cost of C$74 ~US$55. Or simply make an effort to clean up the thread with a thread cleaner or a die?

Automatic Transmission plug drain and filler plugs ... replace?

Question and a solicitation for opinions from everybody: Disregarding expense and effort, it is always better to perform a poor man's flush of the automatic transmission than a drain and refill?

    Compact Rechargeable Cordless Tire Inflator

@outback97: Typically I am driving offroad, parking the X, and then hiking, wading or paddling. Mind you I can think of a couple of places where in the past deflating the tires would have helped with both traction and comfort.

Automatic Transmission plug drain and filler plugs ... replace?

Thanks @IM1RU. I performed a poor man's flush back in May 2020 about 41K km or 25K miles ago. Thought I could get away with a drain and refill this time around.

    Compact Rechargeable Cordless Tire Inflator

Good questions @outback97. I have never deflated my tires offroad so would use it for bicycles, inner tubes (maybe) and emergency top off. In the interests of saving space, I went for the Ryobi model, purchased on sale at Home Depot. I use the same batteries for the lawn trimmer/weed wacker...

Automatic Transmission plug drain and filler plugs ... replace?

Thinking I should drain and refill the Automatic Transmission. Done in January 2020 and we are now 4 years later. Towed once since then. Question: Should I replace the drain and filler plugs as well as the gaskets or can I, similar to the rear differential get away with re-using the existing...

    Compact Rechargeable Cordless Tire Inflator

Good idea. I have Makita 18V tools and a 18V Ryobi weed wacker (trimmer). The Makita tire inflators are a little big but the Ryobi one is rather compact. It lacks features but is inexpensive. Do like the Milwaukee portable tools and reckon they are well worth the extra expense. RYOBI 18V...

    Compact Rechargeable Cordless Tire Inflator

My 12 Volt DC Air Compressor died on me recently and I wish to replace it. Any thoughts, experiences with these rechargeable lithium battery operated portable tire inflators? Any recommendations for specific models? Something small and easy to store is preferred.

Exhaust studs, bolts, nuts: locktite or anti-seize?

Looks like the brake and muffler shop that the Nissan dealership contracted the catalytic converter/exhaust system work to used Red Locktite on the bolts. I removed the bolt it the picture below from the rear of the driver side primary cat because it had no nut. Replaced with a new bolt, a...

Exhaust studs, bolts, nuts: locktite or anti-seize?

Any thoughts on using washers and/or lock washers on exhaust connections? I would think that lock washers would not work in the high temperatures.

Exhaust studs, bolts, nuts: locktite or anti-seize?

A neighbour rides a Harley and says he puts blue locktite on all his bolts due to the vibration. He recommended I do the same for the off-road Xterra. He has worked as a hunting and fishing guide in remote parts of British Columbia so he knows what hard pounding washboard looks and feels like...

Rear differential plugs and RTV gasket maker

I had a bit of leakage through the PS rear axle seal that messed up the rear brakes a little. About 4 years ago, I did the rear axle breather modification, replaced brake parts and thoroughly cleaned up the area. Thought about switching out the rear wheel bearings at the time but put it off...

Rear differential plugs and RTV gasket maker

Agreed. As I was re-using the old plugs, and the new ones come with thread coatings, so I wanted to make extra sure. That said, I have read a few accounts of others re-using the old plugs with no sealant. Glad I did it. There was almost zero material on the magnets but the fluid was dark and...

    The Grackle

Had the windshield replaced about a month and half ago with an aftermarket one. I don't bother insuring for them. Cracked this past winter when temperatures dipped to -22C. Beautiful. What a difference. It is like looking at a super high-definition quality monitor. Now the British...

Rear differential plugs and RTV gasket maker

@IM1RU: I usually replace the crush washer on the oil pan drain about once every 3 or 4 years and have never had an issue with oil leaking through that drain plug so yeah, I am well familiar with the concept of ignoring FSM recommendations. Sometimes it hard to know when to carefully follow...
