To help the rest of us decide which rear aftermarket bumper to invest in, post up pics of yours. Please include the following information:
  • Brand (who made it)
  • Cost
  • Pros of it
  • Cons of it
  • Any gizmos/gadgets it has, i.e. tire carrier, hi-lift mount, cb mount, etc.
  • When it was mounted

I, unfortunately, do not have any aftermarket bumpers (too poor right now). But am shopping around for one. Therefore, those of you that do have one, post up!

I am also in the want category, could get just a rear bumper but if im going to do it might as well get the tire carrier too right?

Brand: MAXterra Bumper
Cost: about $400 shipped (more if tire carrier option is added)
Pros: Good build quality, fast delivery, silver vein powder coating looks awesome, Dave (builder) was great to work with.
Cons: Only that it is a tight fit for a 285 75 R16 MT if you leave the spare in the stock location.
Purchased: January 2010
Add-ons: none

We seriously debated a tire carrier, but decided against b/c 1. We use the hatch a lot and 2. the X would no longer fit in the garage with it and we live close enough to a major thru-way to have some concerns about people messing with our vehicles when left out at night. MaXterra does have a nice tire carrier option though.

I also would like a rear bumper with tire carrier. Not sure which brand I want to go with.

So far, I'm liking Shrockworks and T.A.G.

  • TAG ( Tactical Armor Group, Formerly KMA)
  • $540 shipped
  • Stands up to abuse really well (i.e. when the departure angle isn't great enough), integrated hitch and shackle mounts
  • Fit isn't exactly perfect, but it went on after I got rear ended so that may have been the problem
  • I like it bare, so I opted for the hitch, shackles, and trailer wiring holes. I also plan to have it fully enclosed one day so that I can make it into an air tank. If not that, possibly a rear winch.

TAG (when they were KMA) did all the armor work on my X - front winch bumper, rock rails, and skids. Other than a retarded rock rail design and not enough initial front bumper clearance (which I believe was due to a poor job on the original owner's part) - my stuff from them seems OK. The rock rails need to be edited or replaced, tho.

I'm talking to RLC currently about fabbing a 2nd gen - we'll see how that goes. I'll update the thread if / when something tangible comes of that. I'd like to see him basically emulate the Shrock design, b/c I like how the spare carrier on the Shrock doesn't lean so far away from the rear hatch like the Hefty's seem to.

Def. need to check out the Maxterra ones, too, however. I need most of the add-ons: hitch receiver / trailer plug opening, spare tire carrier, and the shackle/recovery mounts.

Tamara, if he needs to measure a rear bumper and you don't get up there by tax time I will let him measure mine.

Good to know! I'd like to see if we can get something going around Xmas time, but I'll keep you posted if it ends up that we can't synchronize schedules w/ him.

GetSome Fab
$850
Mounted 01.2012
Pro- place for my gas cans, steeper approach angle w/ removal of curt hitch, flush mounted plug-in, gas cans can be locked in place w/ padlock
Con- not sure how much I like "T" handle, maybe if I have it shortened.
Gadgets- 2 recovery pts, hitch, cb mount, bottle opener, license mount, 2 gas/water can carrier, tire carrier

I went wheeling the other day and it did not rattle at all, which I appreciated. Also I really like the fact that the tire mount does not lean forward, instead it leans back towards to hatch, following the natural angle of the rear of the X.

All my current bumpers now have an additional 1" of clearance on the back side to address this issue, plus some additional braces at midpoint of each side...
Works with std & 2" BL. LED license plate light included and pre-wired

Rear bumpers

Made by chef nate and his brother, possibly the best bumper ever made for a 2nd gen xterra imo, never shakes and that is because of the design on the latch. I give you a chefnate classic and yes it is classic only 10 were made.

I'll post my custom bumper.. built by me using AtoZ fabrications tire carrier hinge. I put the hinge recessed into the corner bumper piece (never been done before), I kept the tire as close to the trunk as possible, and I put the tire as close to the hinge as possible. I flipped the hitch so it sits up nice and tight. Still some pieces to finish but it's all basically there... I built it the way I wanted and I've learned a few things since building my 1st gen bumper. If your going custom, keep that tire tight to the hinge and trunk. I hate how all these aftermarket bumpers put the tire on driver side... it's not a good design. I could even run a gobi ladder DS if I wanted to. Oh ya... it cost me around $250.

The other think from passenger to driver side is opening the rear hatch. if the tire is on the driver side the hinge does not have to swing to as great of an angle to move the tire out of the rear hatches path. If its on the passenger side the hinge has to swing to a greater angle to move it out of the way. This is extra true on a second gen with that extra fat top hatch.

I love my rear bumper. I would say its the best latch/hinge design there is. I dropped the whole weight of my X on the hinge when going down a trail and it just stratched the bed-liner off. The tire is in the middle, nice and low. And the rest of it is built rock solid.

The Hummer tire carriers can be pretty cheap if you can find them on CL, or a junk yard. If you do get one from a junk yard try to get a look nat the wreck that it came off of to make sure that everything is straight.

I have a good friend that is runniung one on his fronty, he only had to extend it a little bit to make it work. And has been holding up to heavy wheeling with a 37 on it, for the last 3 years.

Yes its a H2 tire carrier. I got it from Bucksnort from the other 2ndX site (I don't know if he is over here). Sometimes you can find them for cheap othertimes they want 600+ for them. Lucky for me bucksnort had a few laying around he even cut it shorter so it would fit inbeen the plastic. I have a 33" tire on it and 2 jerry cans mounted and the hing has no problem with it. I've even stood on it with it open before.

Well, guess I can add mine.

Custom rear tire carrier by a local fab shop (now closed). It was called GetSome Fabrication in Meridian, ID.
My requirements were to have 2 gas can holders, tire carrier and heim joint.

You cannot tell really well from pic, but tire carrier leans back toward the hatch in line w/ the curve of the hatch.

Profile. Metal strap over gascan locks it in place. They added a loop where I can fit a padlock, too.

209abde8-7cf9-562b.jpg

Heim joint. Goes past where oem bumper stops so that it could fit gascans.

Driving in Boston, I like this setup, hi lift and jeri can can go to the roof....

For my application, I'll be getting one from you....when I'm ready.

I assume I can drill holes for CB ant and extra reverse lights if needed?

All these are older pics and don't accurately reflect current models. I'll need to update/upload my photobucket library.

Your thumb is in the way.

I would say I have not heard any complaints about any of the Xterra owned rear bumper guys. Its more of which options you want and which one you thing looks better.

I would love to see a few pics of a Shrockworks rear bumper from multiple angles. I would like to know how much room is between it and the hatch. I will be ordering one within the next few weeks and would like to know if there is enough room to mount a rotopax behind the tire and see how people wired their antenna and find a place to mount an air compressor nipple, etc.

I had a Shrock's, let me see if I have any pics.. As far as mounting the rotopax between the hatch and the tire there isn't enough room.. You'll have to drill a hole for the air compressor nipple.
Hope that helps
