I’ve been looking and wondering about communication options for my truck. In the X I had a Cobra CB. Now when I sold the X, I kept the CB unit but it’s too big to install it in my current vehicle.

I’ve been wanting to install another handheld form of communication other than cell phone cause let’s face it I end up in places where there is no cell service. People here have mentioned GMRS ( to me that’s the cheesy walkie talkies people have used and picked up at the local Walmart or Canadian Tire) to my surprise it’s developed into something more than what I’ve known.

now I am wondering what is more common for people

I chose to go with GMRS because it seam's that's what everyone is using and I went with the hard mount unit with control's built into the mic . I haven't installed it yet so I'll do .5 of a vote for GMRS .

I have a gmrs and cb in my x. The CB never gets used. Gmrs has more range and much higher power options.

Almost all the base units are also compatible with frs as well. You could also go with a handheld baofeng, batter eliminator and external antenna, if you're not sure if you wanna commit to gmrs.

Unfortunately anything communications wise other than CB and cell is a bit foreign to me. I put white stuff on red stuff for a living ( glorified bandaid peeler) so a lot of this is gibberish to me anyways

I had CB, BUT! it had Bad Feedback coming back into the rig.. With $40.00 in ferrite beads fix and to only talk 2 miles icky! Was told to get Ham, for better range, and Plus, at the time I did SAR. which, required comm's in the deep dark. County Freq, did not work for us.. Ham did worked for getting Rescue/Medical/Law/ Helicopters to our locations.
thus, bunch of us Went Ham route.. cost was cheap. Bofeng radio $25.00 Plus talk on Ham freq as with Public service. CHEAP.. works for us.
many years later.. technology.. has changed allot.. cost wise for radios dropped.

Would suggest, not sure how it works in the Norther turf.. But, why not get Few Boefengs, manually input the GMRS freq into radio, & use them with your family and Trail runs?. with no External Antenna.. Range will be shorter.. But would be better Vs CB. GMRS and FRS came along way..

Bofengs would be your cheapest way.. Not sure cost in North as with the Laws in use of Freq.

But I will take HAM radio freq over GMRS, FRS, and MURS.. BUT, I can use them by dialing them into my Fancy ham Radio ;-)

Oh yea.. having radio Hand held Inside the cab. Vehicle will shield your signal!. Plus, Keeping antenna In Vertical Fashion will Greatly Increase your quality in signal.
Cell phone too, if your having issues with people not hearing yea.. Toss your Cell phone on dash, for clear shot of outside.. Vs the floor board/back pocket .

I have my baofeng programmed with a whole bunch of channels, including weather, all frs/gmrs and some other stuff (including Sar, if needed). For 35 bucks, you have a great handheld that can do pretty much anything you want. Get a battery eliminator, and you don't need to worry about battery life, and an external antenna gives more range.

Need Bigger Tires
I have a couple handheld GMRS units that we use when skiing and off-roading for communicating with each other. Given that they don't need a license to operate up here, and don't need the tuning and such that is usually involved in CB, they work great for a grab-and-go unit. Also, the dedicated units are fairly dummy-proof for non-technical people. I had my 5-year-old niece running around playing cops-and-robbers with my 4-year-old nephew using them a few months back. It was "make sure both screens have the same number on them, hold the lock key to disable the controls, and tell them to push the big button on the side to talk, release to listen".

Working on getting my HAM license for more serious communication (and by that I mean, I need to stop being lazy and actually go do it...), but because of the licensing requirements I can't just carry 2 units, and hand one to a buddy for use in their vehicle if we need to communicate.

GMRS. Especially easy that it's compatible with FRS radios. I have my unit that can reach about 25 miles and use repeaters, but for offroading where range isn't a concern I keep cheap bubble-pack FRS radios I can hand out. They don't require a license, and is somebody forgets to give one back it only costs like $5-10.

So I’ve ordered the unidentifiable CB unit. After a bit of reading. The gmrs here in Canada is limited to 5W and not as popular unless your on a family vacation traveling with multiple vehicles.

still contemplating install8ng one of the midland micro mobile radio. Only time will tell

I think that's a good call for you. Doesn't matter how nice your radio is if no one else in your area is using it.
