So I have a had a whining noise since I bought the X. Sounds kinda like I have one of the Pulley bearings going out. Anyway this weekend I put a stereo in it and now I can hear it through the radio. Is that the alternator going out? And why wouldn't I hear it through the factory radio

Possibly the alternator. Factory radios are generally made better with better electrical filtering. Could also be the routing of the power and ground wires of the new radio.

Well done some reading and the altenator is the cause, however I'm not sure that means it's going bad.

The suggestion is to put a noise filter in line with the radio power.

I just dont understand what it is that making that same type noise under the hood.

Might just have to take it to a parts place and have them test a few things

The brushes and commutator wearing can cause arcing which while still charging, creates electrical "noise" which the radio picks up and amplifies.

Do you know if there is a test that will pick that up? I dont have a problem replacing it but already need to do something to the AC compressor. It was not hooked up from the PO

Your radio seems to be a good enough test. Beyond that is some expensive equipment: Spectrum analyzer and o-scope. Loop the radio power lines (not ground) around a ferrite core. 2-3 turns should be a good starting point. Leave the coil close to the radio.
