Towing With A 1st Gen

Crcxterra

Who else tows a lot with their xterra? I regularly tow my 14ft boat and my 19ft boat. Also my 7x14 utility trailer. I'm impressed with how well it does.

Just installed a receiver hitch on mine. Going to just use for utility trailer for hardware store. Going to build a 8' x 12' shed for the moment.

Thought I would share. Probably the heaviest thing I have towed a CJ-5 from Grand Junction CO to Moab. Also used it once to pull a CJ-2A from Denver to Grand Junction. Slows down over the hill but never felt sketchy but I think the trailer brakes make the biggest differences.

I tow a rally car occasionally and a vintage popup camper. Rally car is on an oversized trailer better suited for a construction-type application, but the X still did the trick. No trailer brakes through, and a blinding snowstorm on a trip that lasted 6 hours.

All my towing has involved a late-80's vintage pop-up camper, 2000 lbs. empty. Mainly camping in Kansas, Nebraska, and Missouri. The X will do it, but you definitely know you're using most of what she's got when you're climbing hills down in the Ozarks.

Radiator and/or water pump could be the culprits, especially if they've never been replaced. Was coolant level correct? If it was low, it might signal anything from a leaky radiator hose to a head gasket problem. Start with the simple things: make sure coolant level is correct, and then maybe change the thermostat (like everything else made by man, once in a while they go bad).

On the 1st Gen, you need to go get yourself a supercharged radiator. The stock rad is a single row. The supercharged is a 2 row. More surface area, better cooling. It's a direct swap with no modifications required.
