New To Me Gen 1 Xterra

603Knight

Test Drive
Rough ride, , let's start with its an SE 2wd . the steering on corners responds poorly but is working. I'm having to hold onto the wheel firmly with some returning input shimmies. Bump responds shakes the whole front end where talking the road grind from removing line markings. That seems overly sensitive but this is a new to me truck. Today I will Jack it up and check the ball joints but they "look" ok.. I'm looking forward to owning this little Gen 1.. thanks for the welcome.

Ok. Sounds like you need to pay particular attention to the pitman and idler arms when you look at the steering. Seems like your idler is probably loose.

If you pull forward in a straight line, stop and then back straight up, do you have to use a lot of steering input to stay straight as you begin to back up?

Good news kinda.. she kept a straight line in both forward and reverse, however I noticed what felt like a flat spot. On closer examination I have a different size tire on one of my trims. This might explain the unsteady feel while at speed.

I lifted both front tires and gave them a shake, nothing seems in your face bad. Power steering pump looked wet so I gave the engine bay a cleaning. I'll take it for a run later and see if anything looks wet again.

Looking good , from the pic's it looks like a Headlight Restoration kit should be in order. I try to make sure there's NO reason for"""them""" to pull me over -dull headlight's and non functioning bulb's are a no go !! ;)
