3.13 Gear Ratio And 33" Tire

It's coming time to replace my tires and I'm wanting to put a set of 285/75/16 on my 2015 S. The 265s I have feel fine, but bigger is better. Will there be any performance hit? If it makes a difference, the places I explore have a lot of clay mud.

I apologize if this has already been discussed. I read a few threads without finding an answer.

Another option that might not have as much of a performance hit is to go with 255/85r16s, instead of the 285s. Same 33" diameter, but a bit narrower and lighter. They are harder to find, but I've been running Cooper ST/MAXXs in that size for a few years.

The biggest hit you'll take is RPM at a given speed, and of course MPG. Going from 3.36's and 33's to 4.10's and 33's was a massive difference, and 3.36's felt gutless off road, I honestly can't imagine running 33's with 3.13's off road. I'm sure they're fine for on road as long you aren't loaded down like I am.

It sounds like you may have decided on sticking with the 265/75R16's... I also think that's a good choice.

FWIW we have two Off Road automatics, so we have the 3.36 gearing. One has 32's (265/75R16) and one has 33's (285/75R16). I have not found the 32's lacking or leaving me wishing I had the slightly larger tire size.

Consider what you gain by a 1" increase in tire diameter: 1/2" of clearance. Now consider the negatives: Gearing. Acceleration. Braking. More suspension and drivetrain wear. More expensive tires.

EDIT - I just realized you may have P265/70R16 tires on your S trim. Going to 285 would be an even bigger jump than if you are starting with 265/75.

The size is 265/75r16, so hearing that it has done fine for you is good news. I don't think I can justify spending on gearing right now!

I have that gear ratio + 265/75r16's, it's noticeably slower off the line but bearable. If you really need to get going you can, it just takes more RPM's to get there.

I just went from 265/70r16 Geolanders, to heavier Mudstar M/ts in 285/65R16 with 3.13 gears. Its slower to start and heavier to stop but drivability and fuel economy were only negligible changes. By odometer I lost about 15miles of range on the new tires, mostly in city and off road driving.
