How To: Rebuild Cv On 2nd Gen Driveshaft

I know this is a part you don't see changed out too often, so I figured I would post a few pics showing how i did mine. I also recommend replacing the U-joint on the transfer case end of the DS if it wasn't done recently. I developed a real bad rattling noise, which is why I changed the DS CV joint. It was very loose in every way.

This is the part, i got it from Rock Auto for about $120.

Remove the driveshaft and get the cover off of the back of the CV joint with a pick or small screwdriver

Break off the clamp on the rubber boot, don't worry about the boot, it will be replaced.

Remove this snap ring with snap ring pliers. Then take the CV off the splined shaft of the DS. I had to tap mine lightly to get it to slide off.

Now you need to pack the new CV with the supplied grease. You need to push it thru, like a wheel bearing, I pushed it thru the inside of the ball til it came out the outside, then moved it around, and did it again. Don't skimp here! Get in there, get messy! Save some for final assembly, i packed it full of grease right before i tapped the cap back on.

Then slide the new CV on. You will have to tap it on, unless you have a press. A 27mm socket fit perfect around the shaft. You will know when it's on all the way when you can put on the snap ring and it's fully seated. Tap on the new cover, don't forget the o-ring! And squeeze on the new clamp and you're done!
