Rear Brake Pad Retainers Do Not Fit

I ordered the Raybestos EHT1101H Disc Pad Set. The pad themselves appear to be identical in size and form to the original rear brake pads.

The brake pad retainers (abutment shims) that came with the set do not fit the stock OEM torque member (abutment bracket).

I require the Xterra in two days for a specific function. So I will clean up the old pad retainers and re-install them with the new pads and new caliper slide pins. :(

Here are some photos that should illustrate in the difference in sizes. Bending the new ones is not an option.

I just informed Rock Auto by email, told RA that I would not return the pads and asked them to send me properly sized pad retainers Eventually I will buy or order on-line pad retainers if Rock Auto cannot or refuses to send me replacements.

EDIT: Rock Auto promptly apologized and immediately sent out a disc brake hardware kit (see below).

Comments? Thoughts? Suggestions?

Had the same problem when I used Raysbestos. I forced them in and they mostly worked but the bigger problem was the pads were taller than the rotor by a mm or two and started making a foghorn sound every time I drove the truck after it rained because the tip of the pad rubbed the outer edge of the rotor.

I kind of doubt RA will send just the clips but it's worth asking. When I replaced the rear pads with Akebono last time everything fit perfectly and the hardware felt like a better quality than the Raysbestos stuff.

something is obviously wrong. I’ve installed 3 or 4 sets of raybestos eht now and they fit correctly. Pads are definitely not taller than the rotor.

Update:

I emailed Rock Auto late last night, actually early this morning, and the service department got back to me at 7:12 AM, apologized for the wrong clips and indicated that a replacement disc brake hardware kit will be shipped to me via the shipping method that I originally chose for the order.

At 9:35 AM, I received confirmation that the 'order' had been shipped.

It would appear that Rock Auto may have been mislead by Raybestos. The Rock Auto catalogue (all 598 pages) lists the Element 3 EHT1101H as fitting 2006-2015 Xterras.

It is worth mentioning that before ordering the rear brake pad set from rockauto.com, I had looked at Amazon.ca. Amazon told me that these Raybestos EHT1101H pads did not fit the 2006 Xterra. I assumed that Amazon.ca was wrong. Wrong. Will not blithely underestimate Amazon.ca going forward.

The EHT1101H pads measure 9 mm in thickness; the FSM calls for the standard to be 11 mm. No matter, they look plenty thick compared to the originals that were down to 2 mm thickness, meaning they should have been replaced a while back.

I chose Raysbestos because many seemed to be very happy with the front brake pads and I did not see any explicit recommendations for specific rear brake pads.

What model of Akebono? Rock Auto carries AKEBONO ACT1101 {#19158240, 44060EA090, 44060EA091} ProACT Ceramic Pad w/ Stainless Hardware
Rear; OE Pad Material Is Ceramic
that supposedly fits the 2006 Xterra.

Amazon.ca carries the same pads but apparently they do not fit the Xterra. (?) Amazon.ca also offers the Akebono ASP1101 Performance Ultra Premium Ceramic Disc Brake Pad Kit that does fit.

Glad to hear they're going to send you the right stuff.

For the rear brakes I bought Akebono ASP1100A and for the front Akebono ASP1094A. I found the part numbers using the parts finding tool directly on the Akebono website.

Update: the clips (brake pad retainers or abutment shims) arrived late this Friday afternoon by Fedex (same dude as the one who delivered the original order to a house on another street). They appear to be identical to the OE clips. There was no charge from Rock Auto who completed the order this past Tuesday morning.

Impressive. I am happy.
